Huntington North stops Patriots' streak (01/09/08)

JCHS girls basketball

HUNTINGTON - A valiant third-quarter comeback led to a seesaw fourth quarter, but the Patriots ended up on the wrong side of the tilt.

The Jay County High School girls basketball team finally saw its winning streak come to an end with a 74-70 loss Tuesday to the Huntington North Vikings.

The Patriots (13-2) had won 13 consecutive games since losing their season opener 62-58 to Class 4A No. 6 Fort Wayne South Side on Nov. 6. They are 0-2 against sectional opponents - they will not meet another sectional foe until the tournament - and 13-0 against everyone else.

Jay County struggled in the opening half, falling behind 34-23 at the intermission. However, the visitors were not going to let their winning streak end without a fight.

Pazia Speed, one of five Patriots in double figures, scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the third quarter. Cassandra Huelskamp added a pair of 3-pointers as she scored eight points, and a Kaelee Keller 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted JCHS to a 54-53 lead.

The teams traded the lead back-and-forth in the final period, with Huntington North taking control late. The Vikings went up 72-70 with a free throw with seven seconds left, but missed the second attempt and Lindsey Wellman came down with the rebound. The Patriot sophomore passed to Kaelee Keller, who tried to go all the way for the game-tying lay-up but was called for a charge on the play.

Huntington North (9-7) added a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Katie Hackney paced HNHS with 19 points, and Liesl Davenport had 10 of her 13 as the Vikings opened their lead in the second quarter. Taylor Foley also reached double figures with 11 points.

Speed had a team-best seven rebounds to go along with her 17 points, and Huelskamp followed with 12 points and six boards. Keller had 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and three assists, and Wellman and Amber Edmundson each scored 10 points.

Junior varsity

Jay County took control with a big third quarter and then held on for a 34-32 win over the Vikings.

The Patriots (13-2) led by just three at the half, but limited Huntington North to just one third-quarter field goal. They were up nine heading into the final period, and held on despite missing seven of their last 12 free-throw attempts.

Mackenzie Loy and Brittany Muhlenkamp each scored eight points for JCHS. Gina Muhlenkamp followed with six points.

Hayley Bradford hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers and was the high scorer for Huntington North with nine points. Kayla Schenkel added seven points.

Freshman

The Patriots struggled in the first quarter, but Brittany Manor caught fire in the second half and the JCHS defense turned in an excellent fourth quarter as the team rallied for a 29-27 victory over the Vikings.

Jay County trailed 14-1 after the first quarter, was down by 10 at the half and still faced a seven point deficit heading into the final quarter.

As the defense locked down in the fourth to hold Huntington North without a field goal, Manor came alive. After hitting a 3-pointer in the third quarter, she added two more in the fourth and scored all of her game-high 11 points in the second half.

Jordan McMillan and Taylor Burris each added five points.

Tajsha Shrock scored all of her 11 points for the Vikings in the first half Courtney Carpenter added nine points.[[In-content Ad]]
