IHSAA offering new scholarship (01/10/04)

The Indiana High School Athletic Association is introducing a new scholarship program in conjunction with the celebration of its 100th anniversary.
Ten college scholarships will be awarded to students who distinguish themselves both athletically and academically. For more information about the IHSAA Centennial Scholarship Program visit http://www.ihsaa.org/scholar_frame.htm.
Soccer notes
The Breakaway RecPlex will host a soccer league and several soccer open gym dates during the upcoming month.
The Celina Indoor Soccer League will begin play Saturday, Jan. 31, and the deadline to register is Saturday, Jan. 17. Games will be played at the RecPlex on U.S. 27 in Celina.
There will be teams for those 8-and-under through adults for the nine-week season. The league membership fee for those under-19 is $63 and for adults is $75.
The RecPlex will also host open sessions for adult soccer players Monday, Jan. 12, Tuesday, Jan. 20, Tuesday and Tuesday, Jan. 27. The cost is $8.
Foul-shooting contest
The Knights of Columbus will hold a free throw shooting contest Friday, Jan. 16.
The contest is for boys and girls ages 10-14. Registration and warm-ups will begin at 5 p.m.
Winners from the contest will advance to compete for the district championship. Proof of age is required, and their will be awards for all participants.

Registration is now open for the Jay County spring travel soccer teams at the Jay Community Center.
Teams are planned for boys and girls in the under-19, under-14, under-12 and under-10 age groups. Registration forms are due Friday, Jan. 30.

Turkey meeting
A representive from the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a meeting in mid-January in hopes of starting a local NWTF chapter.
The meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Jay County Public Library.
Any members of the public who are interested in the topic of conservation or turkeys may attend. The meeting is expected to last about 90 minutes.
Hoops tournaments
The Western Wayne Basketball Club in Cambridge City will host several boys basketball tournaments in February.
The tournaments for third and fourth grade teams will be Feb. 7 and 8 and for seventh and eighth grade teams Feb. 21 and 22. The entry fee is $175, and each team is guaranteed three games.
