Indians advance to tourney finale (02/08/05)

Local Roundup

Fort Recovery didn’t mess around Monday.

The Indian eighth grade girls basketball team racked up 21 first-quarter points and rolled over the Parkway Panthers 53-30 to earn a berth in the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament championship game.

The Tribe will play the New Bremen Cardinals for the title Saturday at Delphos St. Johns at 10 a.m. It lost to New Bremen 40-28 during the regular season.

Anne Koesters and Joanna Snyder led Fort Recovery as it earned a rematch with the Cardinals, scoring 16 and 15 points respectively. The Indians scored in double digits in three of the four quarters as they dominated the Panthers throughout.

Kinsey Wenning added eight points, Kelsey Wuebker had six and Rachel Tobe scored four.

Jay places advances

The Jay County High Rollers boys bowling team will get a chance to defend their regional title after finishing third in the sectional tournament this weekend. The girls team had an outstanding day, notching a couple of record scores to place second and also earn a regional berth.

The boys High Rollers scored a 2,918 for the second in the sectional tournament, but lost to third-seeded South Adams 365-343 to finish third overall. South Adams then fell 423-351 to champion Huntington North in the finals.

The girls reached the final with a team-record score of 1,599, which included a single-game record of 833. They lost to Huntington North in the finals 361-320.

Each of the top three teams from the sectional move on to regional action Saturday at Cooper’s Sport Bowl in Anderson.

Cody Wright was the lone Jay County individual to move on to regional action. He had scores of 193, 267 and 170 for a 630 series to finish fourth in the sectional among 59 competitors.

Wright advanced all the way to the state finals last year, finishing fifth.

No JV vs. Parkway

Because of some injuries to the Parkway squad, there will be no junior varsity contest when the Fort Recovery girls basketball team hosts the Panthers Thursday. The varsity game will begin at 6:30 p.m.
