Indians blast T'birds (01/05/04)

Fort Recovery girls basketball coach Jeff Roessner had warned that his team would eventually find the shooting touch and score a big win. It happened Saturday.

The Indians shot 44 percent from the field, including 50 percent (10-of-20) from 3-point range, as they powered past the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds 79-53.

The Tribe (4-5) scored more than 20 points in each of the first two periods, including a 28-8 advantage in the second. It held a 49-23 lead at the half and never allowed Lima Central Catholic to get close.

Joscie Kaup finished 9-of-17 from the field and 5-of-9 from 3-point range for 25 points in by far her best effort of the season. She also had five assists and four steals.

Freshman Holly Stein followed with a 7-for-13 effort from the field and 4-for-6 from long-range for 18 points. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Sophomore Ciera Rammel earned herself a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to go along with her six steals. Megan Wenning finished with eight rebounds, and Krystal Rammel had seven.

Andra Coleman scored 20 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Thunderbirds. Jessie Niemeyer had 18 points, nine steals, five rebounds and two assists.

Fort Recovery will try to even its record Tuesday when it hosts South Adams (2-8) at 6 p.m.

The Indians also won Saturday’s junior varsity contest, outscoring LCC 15-6 in the fourth quarter for a 36-28 win.

Julie Link had 10 points and five rebounds. Renee Evers added nine points, and Sam Staugler had seven.

Sara Fortkamp finished with eight rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Kayla Helmig scored 11 points for the Thunderbirds.

Stars top New Haven

South Adams pulled within a game of .500 Saturday with a 63-50 victory over the New Haven Bulldogs.

The Starfires (3-4) broke a 14-14 tie after one period, scoring 21 points in the second for a six-point halftime lead. They scored 20 more points in the final period to pull away for the win.

Kyle Neuenschwander racked up 30 points to pace South Adams. He also had six rebounds and pair of assists.

Corey LeMaster and Adam Zimmerman each had 10 points, and Justin Caffee finished with nine points.

Class 3A No. 10 Leo is up next for the Starfires as they hit the road Saturday at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
