ST. MARYS, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade girls basketball scored big in the second half for a 42-32 victory over the St. Marys Roughriders. The Indian seventh graders lost to St. Marys, 17-14.

The Tribe eighth graders trailed 16-11 at halftime, but more than doubled their scoring output in the second half. They still trailed by three after putting up 13 third-quarter points, but outscored the Roughriders 16-5 in the final period to grab the win.

Kendra Brunswick led the victory with 10 points, and Nicole Dilworth scored nine.

Fort Recovery's seventh grade team trailed most of the way in its low-scoring contest. Kelly Nietfeld scored five points and Olivia Schwieterman had three as the squad dropped its season opener.

WJ girls fall to Montpelier

MONTPELIER - West Jay Middle School's girls basketball teams each fell to Montpelier Tuesday. The eighth graders lost 24-19, while the seventh grade team suffered a 36-17 defeat.

Melynda Brackman was the high scorer from either team, leading the eighth grade squad with six points. Taylor Burris followed with four points.

Megan Roush and Kelsey Sell each scored four points for the seventh grade team.

SA tankers slam Giants

BERNE - The Marion Giants proved no match for the South Adams High School girls swim team Tuesday as it improved to 3-0 with a 130-40 victory.

The Starfires dropped two events, but took the top three spots in six and the top two in two others for the blowout. Their dominance included a top-three sweep in the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay.

Jessica Sharp picked up her third straight double win to lead the Starfires. She dominated both the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle in times of 1-minute, 10.01 seconds and 2:14.95 respectively.

Megan Myers edged teammate Jansen Yoder to win the 50 freestyle in 29.00, and Lauren Rich finished in 1:15.10 for the 100 backstroke victory.

Senior Channing Yoder was first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:49.96, and Bethany Maven took the 500 freestyle at 6:16.74.

High Rollers top SW

The Jay County High Rollers high school boys bowling team rebounded from their opening loss to topple Southern Wells Tuesday 18-2. The girls team lost 16-4 to Bellmont.

The High Roller boys earned nine out of 10 points in both games by pin counts of 1,042-920 and 1,004-813. Thomas McCowan turned in a couple of 240-plus games for the high series of 488, and Andy Hughes followed with a two-game total of 448. McCowan, Hughes and Ryan Mescher each scored two points.

Desi Fuller had the top game for the girls team at 202.

Autumn Shepherd rolled a 337 series, and Shanda Morningstar was the lone Jay County bowler to pick up two points.

Schoenlein wins pair

RICHMOND - Lizzy Schoenlein won a pair of events for Gym City Gymnastics as it competed at Richmond Nov. 18.

Schoenlein took first place in both the 7-8-year-old Level 5 vault and balance beam with scores of 8.5 in each. She was also second on the floor exercise at 8.45 and second all-around with a 32.55.

Courtney Miles matched Schoenlein's effort by finishing second on the 6-7-year-old Level 4 floor with a 9.025. Miranda Hibbard had the top results on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.05 for second place among 9 year olds in Level 5.

Others adding top three efforts were Morgan Brown on the 10-year-old Level 5 vault, beam and floor, Malarie Houck on the 10-year-old Level 5 uneven bars and Miranda Hibbard on the 9-year-old Level 5 vault.[[In-content Ad]]
