Indians top Minster in eight (05/14/04)

The Fort Recovery softball team continued to rewrite the history books Thursday as it recorded another team first.

With a dramatic 3-2, eight-inning win over the Minster Wildcats the host Indians completed their best Midwest Athletic Conference season ever with a 5-2 record. They will finish in second place in the MAC.

The Tribe — which extended its record to a school-best 17-6 — led 2-0 after scoring once in the first inning and once in the third. But, Minster tied the game with single runs in the fourth and sixth before Fort Recovery took the victory with a run in the eighth.

Lisa Grisez finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Krystal Rammel was also 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Joscie Kaup added two hits, and Ciera Rammel tripled and scored a run.

Kelsie Will singled and drove in a run, and Brenda Rindler added a single and an RBI.

Alyssa Tobe improved to 7-3 as she tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Fort Recovery will host Wapakoneta today at 5 p.m.

The junior varsity Indians improved to 6-8 Thursday with a 14-6 victory over Minster. The Indians scored twice in the first and then built an insurmountable lead with nine second-inning runs.

Jill Wehrkamp and Kristen Schwieterman finished with matching statistics with four hits, including a double, and a pair of RBIs. Sandra Sudhoff added two hits with a double, two runs and one RBI.

Betsy Overman scored three times, and Lauren Wenning and Kelly Link chipped in two runs apiece.

Wehrkamp also earned the win, striking out three batters in seven innings.

Stars fall late

The visiting Woodlan Warriors scored eight times in the sixth inning Thursday to send the South Adams baseball team to a 10-3 defeat.

The Starfires were up 3-1 heading into the sixth when everything fell apart. Woodlan added one more run in the seventh for the final margin.

Kyle Neuenschwander took the loss as he was hurt by a trio of errors. He allowed nine runs — four earned — in 51/3 innings.

He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Tyler Sprunger gave up one run in 12/3 innings of relief.

Justin Caffee finished the game 2-for-4 with a run. Neuenschwander, Rich Kaup and Aaron Givens each singled and drove in a run.

Sprunger singled and scored a run, and Michael Yoder also scored once.

South Adams will play at Mississinewa Saturday at 11 a.m.

FR JV still winless

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team gave up at least two runs in five different innings Thursday as it fell to Memorial (St. Mary’s) 14-4. It is now 0-15 on the season.

Tony Diller suffered the defeat, allowing eight runs on five hits in 22/3 innings. He walked six batters.

Kevin Schoenherr doubled, drove in one run, scored once and stole a base. Eric Weitzel finished 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

Kenton Sudhoff doubled and drove in a run, and Jesse Fortkamp had a single, a run and a stolen base.

Tribe track 5th, 6th

Eric Lamm earned the only Midwest Athletic Conference championship for the Fort Recovery junior high track teams as he pushed the boys squad to a fifth-place finish with 51 points. The girls placed sixth with 37 points.

Coldwater won the boys competition with 136 points, followed by New Bremen with 123. Minster was first for the girls with 118.5 points, and Versailles was one point behind in second.

Lamm gave the Indians their lone win in the 400-meter dash. He finished in 56.16 seconds, nearly one half second ahead of Tony Harlamert of Coldwater.

He also teamed with Jeremy Schmitz, Michael Trobridge and Matt Vagedes to take third place in the 4x100-meter relay in 51.56. Luke Bihn finished third in the shot put with a toss of 48 feet, one inch.

Heather Schmackers posted the only second-place finish for Fort Recovery at the meet. She finished behind Katie Wierwille of New Knoxville in 13.85.

Rachel Tobe added a third-place finish in the high jump at four feet, six inches.[[In-content Ad]]
