Indians win in extras

Fort Recovery roundup

RUSSIA, Ohio - It took 10 innings. The result was well worth the extra time.

Fort Recovery High School's softball team finally scored in the top of the third extra inning to knock off the Russia Raiders 2-1 Tuesday.

Josie Guggenbiller led the Indians (2-0) with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Kelly Thien and Kendra Brunswick each scored a run.

Kinsey Wenning went the distance for FRHS, which scored its first run in the third inning. She gave up her only run in the sixth and got the win as she struck out nine batters.

Other hits for the Tribe came from Wenning, Carly Staugler, Kelly Sudhoff and Amy Hart.

Darkness ends game

VAN WERT, Ohio - The runs were abundant; daylight was not.

The Lincolnview Lancers and Fort Recovery had to settle for a 15-15 tie Tuesday evening as their baseball game was called after seven innings because of darkness.

The Indians (1-0-1) pounded out six runs in the first inning and had a 9-3 lead midway through the fifth. But host Lincolnview scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and then racked up six runs in the bottom of the seventh to forge a tie at 15.

Nate Keller hit Fort Recovery's first home run of the season to go along with three doubles.

Travis Hart had a triple and a double, Toby Metzger totaled three hits including a double and Brady Kahlig added two hits.

JV softball drops opener

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team dropped its season opener 11-0 to the New Bremen Cardinals in six innings.

Beca Tobe took the loss, giving up seven runs - three earned - on four hits and two walks. New Bremen broke open the game with six runs in the second inning.

Shelby Brunswick doubled and stole two bases for the Indians. Karissa Will also had a double, and Stacy Gehle and Sierra Loya each added a single.

Kaiser, May lead JH track

FORT RECOVERY - Abby May and Jessica Kaiser each won a pair of events Tuesday to lead the Fort Recovery Middle School girls track team to victory.

The Tribe girls finished with 96 points while Arcanum had 44 and Houston scored 10. In the boys competition FRMS was second with 49 points, one ahead of Arcanum and nine behind Houston.

May put up big wins in both of her races, winning the 200-meter hurdles by nearly five seconds in 34.4 seconds. She took the 100 dash in 14.7.

Kaiser tossed the discus 71 feet, which was nine feet further than the runner-up. She was the only athlete to clear the opening pole vault height of 6 feet.

Other wins for the girls team came from Sierra Pugh, Sam Tobe, Alex Shelton, Kelsey Fiely and Stacy Stammen.

Josh Pohl won the 800 run in 2:31.5 and the 1,600 run in 5:20.1 for the boys team. Nathan Fullenkamp and Mitch Vagedes also had victories for the Indians.
