Ja-Mar, PG-14 win Thursday night thrillers (05/14/04)

There was plenty of excitement to go around Thursday as both Portland Junior League Willie Mays League games were decided by one run in extra innings.

The first contest saw PG-14 edge Sertech Heating and Cooling 9-8 in eight innings. Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance grabbed the second thrilling win 8-7 over Portland Optimist in seven innings.

In Pee Wee Reese action First National Bank knocked off Lions 8-6. Loy Realty and Auction defeated Tyson in the lone Rookie League softball game of the night.

Sertech scored twice in the top of the eighth inning for an 8-6 lead, but Tony Schwieterman, Landry Inman and Shawn Homan opened the seventh with consecutive walks for PG-14. Andrew Eley, David Rosenbeck and Trevor Blankenbaker also walked in the inning to bring in Schwieterman, Inman and Homan for the victory.

PG-14 seemed to be headed for a sure win as it led 5-0 after five innings, but Sertech scored five times in the top of the sixth to force extra innings. Both teams scored once in the seventh inning, and Sertech jumped in front in the eight before PG-14 took the win.

Homan tripled and scored three times of PG-14. Rosenbeck had a double and four runs, and Inman also scored twice.

Chase Addington had two hits, including a double, and a run for Sertech.

Ja-Mar 8, Optimist 7, seven innings

Matt Segraves’ single drove in Brock McFarland with the winning run to cap a three-run seventh inning for Ja-Mar.

After Optimist scored twice in the top of the seventh Ty Huntsman started the Ja-Mar rally with a one-out double. Alex Dunn and McFarland each walked before Segraves delivered his game-winning hit.

Segraves finished with two hits, including a double, and a run, and Ty Huntsman doubled twice and scored two runs. Braden Lykins also scored a couple of runs.

Dillion Ainsworth racked up three hits, including a triple, and one run for Optimist.

First National 8, Lions 6

Aaron Emerick doubled for one of his two hits, and he also scored three times for First National. Michael Sager added a double and a pair of runs.

Eric Homan had two hits, including a triple, two runs and an RBI for Lions.

Loy 14, Tyson 8

Cheyene Petro ripped a pair of home runs and finished with three hits and two runs scored for Loy. Abby Vance had three hits, including a triple, and three runs, and Lindsay Myers, Sarah Lowe and Shelby Grattli each scored twice.

Madison McCormick notched two hits and three runs for Tyson.

Pitching clinic

Portland Junior League will host a pitching clinic Saturday at the field at Weiler-Wilson Park at 10 a.m.

Steve Bunn of Kokomo will be the instructor, and each pitcher is asked to bring their own catcher. The cost of the clinic is $10, and participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the clinic in order to register.
