Tuesday evening's game was over almost as soon as it started.
The Jay County High School boys soccer team scored three times in the first seven minutes, then spent the rest of the game making sure all of its players saw action. The Patriots clobbered the visiting Union City Indians 10-0 for their fourth straight victory.
"It was a good opportunity to give all my kids a chance to play and give them some varsity experience," said JCHS coach Alan Bailey. "All 30 kids got to play tonight."
Chase Ainsworth got the scoring started for Jay County (4-1-1). He pushed in on the right side, and then sent the ball across the front of the goal to allow Justen Moser to deflect it in for a 1-0 lead.
Moser's goal came just 2-minutes, 36 seconds into the game, and Ainsworth nailed a shot of his own less than three minutes later. Union City goalie Adam Bond tried to stop another JCHS shot at the 33:49 mark, but Jordan Moser knocked it away and Jason Penrod charged in and scored for a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots started substituting heavily after taking the early advantage, and did not score again until there were about five minutes remaining in the opening half. Derek Bartlett took care of that tally, ripping a shot just inside the left post.
Jay County added three more goals in the final 3:32, and Isaac Poole was in on all of them.
Poole blasted a high shot for the first of those tallies, and then booted a crossing pass across the goal two minutes later.
His pass was deflected, but Trey Dunn and Brad Horn converged on the ball at the left post with Horn tapping in for the score.
With just 33 seconds left, Poole worked around Indian defender Oscar Calderon and ripped a shot through Bond's hands for a 7-0 halftime lead.
Bailey said he's been happy with the effort his team has turned in for consecutive wins over Delta, Connersville, Norwell and the Indians.
"After the Norwell game, I thought all the kids played exceptionally well," he said. "Our passing was tremendous in the second half ... We're all playing strong.
"Losing to Muncie Central in the first game of the season, that's a tough game to open up with ... They're coming together fairly well right now."
After manning the goalie position in the first half, Adam Daniels emerged in the second half for back-to-back goals. He knocked a shot inside the right post with 11:08 left in the game, and scored again five minutes later.
Jeremiah Cotherman capped the scoring at the five minute mark.
The Patriots now look ahead to hosting the Blackford Bruins Thursday, their second in a stretch of three straight games at home against the three teams in its sectional group.
"Blackford is going to be a tough game for us. I know that already," said Bailey, whose team will also host South Adams Saturday at noon. "With us beating (the Bruins) in the sectional championship game (last year), I'm sure that they're going to be up for us. I expect a good game.
"This is our sectional week, so it'll tell us exactly where we're at right now."
