Jay closes with victory

MARION — The Patriots dropped their first two matches Saturday before bouncing back to finish the regular-season with a win.
The Jay County High School volleyball team closed the day at the Marion Invitational with a 24-26, 25-18, 15-11 victory over the host Giants. Earlier in the day it lost 9-25, 25-18, 15-8 to Eastbrook and 16-25, 25-12, 16-14 to Northfield.
Senior Hannah Ainsworth had 55 digs, 41 assists, 18 service points, seven kills and four aces to lead the Patriots, who are 10-22 heading into their opening-round sectional match against New Haven at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fort Wayne South Side. Bre McIntire racked up 28 kills, 17 service points and two blocks.
Malarie Houck totaled 37 digs, and Kylie Osborne had 22 kills.
The junior varsity Patriots won the tournament, defeating Eastbrook 25-18, 20-25, 15-10, Northfield 16-25, 25-21, 15-13 and Marion 25-16, 25-23. Mallory Marshall set the pace with 23 kills, 19 service points, 15 digs and five aces, Faith Parr had 21 service points and 14 digs and Courtney Finnerty put up 32 assists.

FR blanks Wildcats
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s junior varsity football team turned in its third shutout of the season Saturday as the Indians rolled to a 21-0 victory over the Minster Wildcats.
All three of the FRHS shutouts this year have been by 21-0 scores, with the others coming against Waynesfield-Goshen and New Bremen.
While the defense was holding Minster scoreless, Wes Wenning found the end zone twice for the Indians (5-2). He scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter and a 5-yarder in the fourth, and added a run for a two-point conversion.
Darien Sheffer had a 5-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Jackson Hobbs booted an extra point.

Jay freshmen win
HUNTINGTON — The Jay County freshman football team finished its season with a victory Saturday, defeating the host Huntington North Vikings 24-18.
Matt Blackford ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a TD pass. Quarterback Drew Huffman ran for a touchdown and a two-point conversion, and Skyler Johnson had an interception.
The Patriots, who led 24-6 at halftime, finished the season at 3-3.


Stars win tourney
PONETO — South Adams Middle School’s volleyball teams each walked away Saturday as Allen County Athletic Conference champions.
The Starfire eighth grade squad won the ACAC Tournament championship match 25-21, 25-20 over Adams Central. It defeated Garrett 25-18, 25-23 in the semifinal round.
The SAMS seventh graders also topped Adams Central in the title match, rallying for a 17-25, 25-22, 15-6 victory. They beat Heritage 25-5, 25-19 in their semifinal match.

Fort spikers fall
NEW BREMEN and COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery eighth grade volleyball team closed its season with a 25-7, 25-15 loss to New Knoxville on Saturday in the Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament at New Bremen. The seventh graders also lost in MAC tournament action, 25-19, 25-22 to St. Henry at Coldwater.
Abby Wenning totaled two service points, one kill and one block for the eighth grade Indians, who finished at 5-15. Devin Post had two assists, one block and one service point, and Logan Ranly scored two service points.
Kelsey Jutte led the seventh grade team (12-8) with 11 service points and six assists. Alexis Bubp had 13 digs, Grace Thien scored 10 service points and Carley Stone notched two kills and a block.

Heiser places ninth
MONTPELIER — Jamie Heiser was the top area driver in competition Friday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Heiser, Fort Recovery, finished in ninth place in the Outlaw Super Streets race. Richard Williams and Jeff Baldauf, both of Portland, followed in 13th and 18th respectively.
Portland’s Brian Baldauf was 10th in the Outlaw Thunder Cars race, and Travis Nichols, also of Portland, finished 12th. Doug St. Myers, Redkey, placed 12th in the UMP Modifieds event.
Three local drivers also competed in the Thunder Cars non-winners challenge, with Jeff Baldauf placing 10th, Brian Baldauf 12th and Nichols 15th.[[In-content Ad]]
