Jay County swimmers broke six team and pool records and eight conference records Saturday. But they settled for a second-place finish.
South Adams used its depth to rack up 2,511 points at the Wabash Valley Conference Swimming Championships at Portland Pool to finish ahead of Jay County (2,202) in the four-team event.
Anne Vormohr led the record-breaking efforts for Jay County in her three victories. She set team, pool and conference records in the 11-12-year-old girls backstroke, individual medley and short freestyle.
Sophie Bader picked up records in a pair of events, setting, team, pool and conference maks in the 11-12-year-old girls butterfly and the conference record in the long freestyle. She also teamed with Vormohr, Ashley mark and Sydney Mathias to set team, pool and conference records in the medley relay.
Alex Bader came up with team, pool and conference records in the 9-10-year-old girls butterfly, and Eme Miller set the conference record in the 15-and-older girls short freestyle.
Aaron Hudson, Sophie Bader, Alex Bader, Eliza Bader and Miller all joined Vormohr in posting three victories. Katy Smeltzer and Neal Fennig each won two events. Single wins came form Lilly Clemmons, Kearsten Myers, Ethan Corwin and Caitlin Mark.
The team also held its awards celebration Sunday with Myers picking up Most Improved honors and Brianna Haywood winning the Rookie of the Year. Hudson earned the Jacqui Baxter Sportsmanship and Team Leadership Award.
Top point honors for the season in each division went to Eliza Bader, Cameron Henry, Alex Bader, Christopher McDowell, Sophie Bader, Anne Vormohr, Sok Vormohr, Katy Smeltzer, Zane Shreve, Eme Miller, Neal Fennig and Aaron Hudson.[[In-content Ad]]
