The Patriots probably would have liked to play the front nine twice.

Half of the Jay County High School's girls golf team had all three of its birdies and four of its five pars at Thursday's Muncie Central Invitational on the front nine at The Players Club. It was 30 strokes better on the front than on the back in shooting a score of 423 for a fourth-place finish in the eight-team field.

The other half of the team stayed home at Portland Golf Club to shoot 245 for a victory over the Tri Titans. Tri did not have enough players to post a team score.

At TPC, Richmond won easily with a score of 319 as medalist Trisha Witherby finished 10 strokes in front of the field with a 69. Hagerstown was second 40 strokes behind the Red Devils, and Delta was third at 403.

Cara Garringer had the best stretch of the tournament for JCHS on the fifth through seventh holes. She started the run with a birdie on the 138-year, par-3 fifth hole, and then parred the 270-yard, par-4 sixth and the 77-yard, par-3 seventh.

She added four bogies on the front nine for a career-best nine-hole score of 43.

Garringer and Abby Denney, both sophomores, shot matching 100s to lead the Patriots.

Denney came up with her career-best 18-hole score with a birdie thanks in part to a birdie on the sixth hole. She parred the 333-yard, par-4 ninth hole for a 47 on the front side, and also had JCHS's lone par on the back on the 420-yard, par-5 15th.

Macey Gerber gave the Patriots a third birdie on the 425-yard, par-5 second hole. She also parred the seventh hole as she shot 111.

Rachel Osterholt had five bogeys in her round of 112. Alex Bunch finished with a 128.

At PGC, Jennifer Hunt had the best score as Jay County picked up a win in its first dual meet of the year. She shot 52, and sophomore Anneliese Jetmore followed with a 55.

Brittany Stevens finished at 64, Katie Garlinger shot a 74 and Megan Price finished at 83.[[In-content Ad]]
