The pace went from fast forward to slow motion.

Jay County High School's boys basketball team forced this issue as it built a 25-point halftime lead over the visiting Union City Indians in the first half, and then slowed the pace in the second as they marched to a 68-28 victory.

"We knew coming out of the gate we needed to try to speed up the tempo of the game because they're young and inexperienced," said JCHS Craig Teagle, whose team improved to 13-5. "We wanted to make the game a little faster than what they could play. The first couple minutes we did not do that, but as the game went on I thought we did a pretty good job speeding them up ..."

The Patriots trailed 4-2 less than two minutes into the game, but went on a 21-4 run over the next five minutes to take control for good. The final two of those baskets came after steals by Billy Wellman and Kyle Simmons as JCHS forced six first-quarter turnovers.

Simmons had 11 of Jay County's 25 first-quarter points, and Wellman added eight, including two 3-pointers.

A 5-0 stretch to open the second quarter extended the Patriot lead to 20, and they also had an 8-0 run later in the period on the way to a 44-19 halftime lead. They scored the first 14 points of the second half, shooting 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the field in the third quarter.

Wellman racked up 17 points for Jay County, and Simmons finished with 15. Homan joined the pair of seniors in double figures with 11 points as the Patriots had an unusually deep scoring attack.

Ten players scored at least two points for JCHS as Teagle cleared his bench in the second half. Brad Horn and Josh Beaty each totaled four points and two rebounds, and Ben Walter had two points.

"We usually play seven guys, so it was nice to get all those kids in and get them some varsity playing time," said Teagle. "The group that was on the floor at the end, that's our group next year. That's the group that'll be playing varsity basketball for us."

The Patriots dominated defensively and on the glass, limiting Union City (2-14) to 24 percent shooting and winning the battle of the boards 36-15. The Indians were the second team this season Jay County has held to fewer than 30 points, and the ninth it limited to 40 or fewer.

Union City went scoreless for the first 6:30 of the second half before Kaleb Steveson buried a 3-pointer. The Indians shot 3-of-16 (19 percent) after the intermission, and scored just three fourth-quarter points.

"I thought our close-outs were good tonight," said Teagle. "Anytime you hear squeaky tennis shoes on the gym floor defensively that means you're ... moving your feet. I'd still like to see our hands be a little more active."

Wellman led the rebounding effort with seven, and Simmons and Homan each added five. Westlake and Lance Franklin, who returned to action after missing three games with a health problem, grabbed four boards apiece.

"For a change, somebody was our size," Teagle said. "Height-wise they were about the same size we were. We were just a little stronger than them. Our kids did a nice job crashing the boards."

Senior Darcy Thomas led the Indians with eight points, all of which came in the opening quarter. Steveson and Dallas Doppler each hit two 3-pointers for six points, but Union City shot just 18 percent from two-point range.

Frankie Candiano grabbed three rebounds, and Tyler Mote had two assists.

Despite the 40-point margin Teagle was complimentary of the Indians, who got significant playing time from three sophomores and two freshmen.

"Those kids are young, but every game we went and watched them play they dove all over the floor," Teagle said. "They play hard. They don't play like they have a losing record."

Junior varsity

Jay County held the Indians without a field goal in the opening quarter on the way to a 41-32 victory.

The Patriots were up 9-1 after the opening period before seeing their lead slip to just three points at the half. But they opened a double-digit lead in the second half as they improved to 17-1.

Brad Horn paced JCHS with 13 points, and Zack Cash joined him in double figures with 10. Josh Beaty followed with seven points.

Tyler Mote was the lone Union City player to reach double figures with 12 points.
