Jay Co. brings down the Giants (08/20/03)

Local Roundup

The defending sectional champions showed at least one October foe that they will not allow their title to be taken easily, despite a mostly new starting lineup.

Jay County, which has won two of the last three Marion Sectional titles, defeated the Marion Giants 3-2 in its first tennis match of the season Tuesday.

The victory didn’t come easily, as the Patriots debuted four players who have never seen varsity playing time. But, their two varsity veterans were there to carry the load.

Senior Derek Powell was off the court in no time against Tyler Edmonds at No. 2 singles. He rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Kurtis Hess, a sophomore, got started a little slowly before continuing the success he started in his freshman season. He opened the 2003 campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jon Russell at No. 1 singles, running his career record to 19-2.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Chip Feazel and Adam Paxson took the first set against Sean Willman and Kyle Carter 6-3. They lost the second, 6-4, before rallying to clinch the victory for Jay County with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win.

Sophomore Wil Goodrich got off to a quick start at No. 3 singles, but Ryan Newton held strong to beat him 6-3, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, Matthew Peterson and Randy Evans suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Jared Thorne and Brock Spencer.

Jay County also took the junior varsity victory, winning 3-0 and dropping just one game along the way.

Tyler Rigby smashed Kip Kershner 8-0 at No. 1 singles, while Travis Smith pounded Kevin Aaron by the same score in the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 singles, Jeff Sims smoked John Siler 8-1.

The Patriots will host Norwell Thursday at 4:30 p.m. before taking a trip to the highly competitive DeKalb Invitational Saturday.

The Starfires got another big match from Kelly Mertz, who slammed down 16 kills. She also came away with 17 digs, and added five blocks.

Lee Ann Snyder and Robyn Habegger trailed Mertz with five kills apiece. Snyder added a trio of blocks.

The South Adams junior varsity squad lost 21-13, 21-10 to the Lions, and the freshman team dropped a 21-7, 21-19 decision.
