WINCHESTER — In just over a week the Patriots have turned their fortunes around.
The Jay County softball team was 4-7, struggling in yet another sub-.500 season. But it won five straight games in a span of eight days, capped by a double-header sweep of the Winchester Golden Falcons Saturday.
The Patriots smashed Winchester 11-0 and 14-0 — both in five innings — to improve to 9-7 on the season. They are within one victory of last year’s win total with at least 12 games still left to play, and can reach double digits when they host Yorktown today.
Everything came together for Jay County against the Golden Falcons. It racked up 19 hits, played its second and third straight error-free games and got a combined 16 strikeouts from pitchers Amber Edmundson and Shae Keller.
The victory improved Keller to 7-5 on the year as she tossed a two-hit shutout. Edmundson’s shutout came on just three hits and neither pitcher surrendered a walk.
Keller was one of many offensive stars in the opener, finishing with a single two runs and two stolen bases. Leah Murray had a single, an RBI and two runs, Amber Champ notched two runs and an RBI, and Chelsea DeBoy had a hit, two RBIs and a run.
Saffron Redwine keyed the barrage in game two, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run. Trisha Champ had two runs and two RBIs.
Miranda Betz scored three runs, Lauren Edmundson scored twice and Amber Champ had two hits.

Jay County ran its record to 7-1 with a 5-4, eight-inning victory over the visiting Eastbrook Panthers.
Anastasia Turner earned the win for the Patriots, striking out 11 batters. She gave up four runs — one earned — on three hits and one walk in eight innings.
Briana Blanton, Turner, Dannie Grant and Katie Barrett each had a pair of hits. Blanton also scored twice.
Jay County also swept a double header over the Muncie Southside Rebels Thursday, 10-0 and 8-6. Brittany Mann and Jessica Piercy each totaled three hits and four runs.[[In-content Ad]]
