Jay Co. crushes Centerville (06/23/04)

Local Roundup

The losing streak ended in a big way Tuesday.

The Jay County Summer Swim Team ended a two-meet skid Tuesday with a 3,474-970 destruction of Centerville. The team had opened 4-0 and then lost back-to-back meets to South Adams and Catalina before blasting host Centerville.

Jay County won all but two of the 16 relays and also took two-thirds of the individual victories led by a quartet of triple-event winners — one in each age group.

Zane Shreve was first in the 8-and-younger boys individual medley, breaststroke and short freestyle, and Mary Hudson won the 9-10-year-old girls long freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. In the 11-12-year-old girls division Alysha Miller took the long freestyle, butterfly and short freestyle, and Derrick Lee captured the 13-and-older boys 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and butterfly.

Four other athletes — Ivy Simons, Cori Vormohr, Ashley Imel and Sam Miller — added two wins apiece in the 13-and-older division. Other Jay County swimmers to win a pair of events were Cailtin Mark, Rachel Vogler and Aaron Hudson.

The team will return home to Portland Pool Thursday to host Randolph County at 6 p.m. Team pictures will be taken at 5:10 p.m.

Williams honored

Heath Williams kept a streak alive this week as the Jay County shortstop was selected to play in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series.

It marked the fourth straight season in which a Patriot player was chosen for the team. Williams’ selection followed that of Adam Homan in 2003, Kyle Champ in 2002 and Alan Garringer in 2001.

Shannon Stigleman was the series’ most valuable player in 1991.

Williams led the Patriots from his leadoff spot this year. He was the top Patriot in runs, hits, home runs and stolen bases.

Fifty players were selected for this year’s series — 25 each on the North and South teams — which will be played at Ruxer Field in Jasper. There will be a double-header Saturday, July 10, and the third game will be played Sunday, July 11.

The All-Stars will be honored at a banquet Friday, July 9, at which Hoosier Diamond magazine will present several awards. There will also be a home-run derby prior to Sunday’s game.

Rockets roll

The Portland Rockets ran off their fifth straight victory Tuesday, topping the Grand Lake Mariners 7-2 at Celina.

Jay County graduate Pete Byrum earned the win as he struck out seven and allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings. Kyle Heyne tossed the final two frames, running his total of scoreless innings to 14 in a row.

Brandon Dillon paced the Rocket offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Tommy Pearce and Brian Meyer each had a pair of hits.

Portland (11-4) will host the Decatur Dragons tonight at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
