Jay Co. defeats FWSS in five (05/18/06)

JCHS baseball

The Jay County baseball team pulled even at .500 Wednesday with a 3-0, five-inning victory over the Fort Wayne Southside Archers. The Patriots learned their sectional fate this morning, and will find out even more about their chances Friday night.

The IHSAA held the state tournament draw today, and Jay County will meet up with Elwood in the first game of the Class 3A Blackford sectional. The teams play each other in regular-season action Friday.

The Patriots (9-9) managed to get in enough innings for a full game before the downpour Wednesday, getting big efforts from the Joshes.

Josh Shatto earned the victory, allowing just one hit and one walk in five innings. He struck out six batters.

Josh Ludy came up with hits in both of his at bats, with one flying out of the park for a solo home run. Josh Selvey kept the name rolling with a hit, a run and an RBI.

John Retter had an RBI single, and Andy Hughes singled and scored a run. Luke Goetz also had a hit for the Patriots.

Jay County will open play in the Blackford sectional against Elwood Monday, May 29, (Memorial Day) at 5 p.m. Mississinewa and Tipton will meet in the other opening-round contest at 7:30 p.m.

The Jay County/Elwood and Mississinewa/Tipton winners will play in the first of two semifinal games Friday, June 2, at 5 p.m. The host Bruins will play Delta in the other semifinal contest Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game will be Saturday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. The winning team will move on to the regional round to play the winner of the Benton Central sectional.

The Patriots split a double-header with Mississinewa this season, and lost to Delta. Their game against Blackford was called in the fourth inning because of rain, and they do not play Tipton during the regular-season.

Jay County has not won a sectional championship in baseball since 1995. It dropped out of the tournament last season with a 10-9 loss to Mississinewa in the tournament’s opening round.

It has lost in the first round in three straight seasons, with the last sectional victory coming by a 10-1 score over Maconaquah at Peru in 2002.[[In-content Ad]]
