Jay Co. defeats the Jets

JCHS softball

MONROE - The Patriots closed their regular-season in impressive fashion.

Pazia Speed hit a home run as the Jay County High School softball team finished its weather-ravaged year with a 9-3 victory over the host Adams Central Flying Jets.

The team, which played just 14 regular-season games this season because of weather cancellations after playing 25 in 2008, will meet Marion in the opening round of the Class 4A sectional tournament at Homestead Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Speed's home run was part of a big offensive day for the Patriots (8-6), who scored three times in the top of the first inning and never trailed. She drove in a pair of runs.

Tiffany Davis finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Danielle Wellman went 4-for-5 with a double. Kendra Younger scored twice and drove in a run, courtesy runner Anneliese Jetmore also scored twice, and Brittany Mann, Selena McKibben and Jessica Piercey added one RBI apiece.

Brittney Watson went the distance, giving up three runs on 10 hits and two walks to earn the win. She struck out four batters.

Jay County's victory over the Jets guananteed a third straight winning season. The Patriots would need to reach the sectional championship game to reach double-digit wins for the third consecutive year.
