The Jay County Summer Swim Team finished off its regular season in a big way, stomping on North Adams Central by a final score of 792-88.
Jay County (6-2) won every relay and 51 out of 57 individual events on the way to the rout. It will swim at the Wabash Valley Conference Championships Saturday at South Adams at 9 a.m.
Cori Vormohr was again in record-breaking form Tuesday, setting one new team record and two new pool records.
Vormohr set pool and team records in the breaststroke, taking down cousin and coach Taylor Fullenkamp’s mark with a swim of 37.62. She also set a pool record in the backstroke in 34.67.
The only 11-12-year-old girls record she does not own is coach Abby Arnold’s team backstroke record, which Vormohr missed by just nine hundredths of a second. She also won the short freestyle, missing her own record mark in that race by three hundredths of a second.
Vormohr got plenty of help from her teammates as seven other Jay County athletes picked up three wins apiece.
Michelle Landfair teamed up with Vormohr to own the 11-12-year-old girls division as she won the long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.
Lane Hull and Rachel Vogler took care of the 8-and-under age group. Hull took first in the long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke while Vogler won the butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle.
Derick Lee and Ashley Imel matched Hull and Vogler in the 15-and-older division. Lee was first in the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, and Imel earned victories in the butterfly, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Alysha Miller picked up wins in the 9-10-year-old girls long freestyle, individual medley and short freestyle, and her brother Sam Miller captured the 13-14-year-old boys long freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
Winning two events each for Jay County were Zane Shreve, Lucas Holcomb, Shane Stein, Trey Dunn, Shelby Rines, Matt Eldridge and Matthew Peterson.
The team will hold its family swim and awards ceremony Sunday. The family swim will be from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. with awards to be presented at 6:30 p.m.
East Jay ousted
The East Jay junior high baseball team dropped out of the East Central Indiana tournament with a 5-4 loss to Yorktown last week.
The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 through most of the game before East Jay (18-5) seemed to take control with a three-run sixth inning. Yorktown pulled back within one with a two runs in the bottom of the frame before Wednesday’s rain forced the game to be halted.
The game was picked up Saturday morning with Yorktown threatening as it had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Yorktown tied the game on a fielder’s choice, and East Jay recorded the second out on a pop up.
East Jay was one out away from forcing extra innings, but Yorktown scored the game-winning run on a passed ball. Kaleb Carpenter took the loss in relief of Casey Waters.
Josh Ludy had three hits, including a double. Aaron Wilhelm added a triple in the contest.
