PORTLAND — The Jay County boys golf team is perfect now. They hope to be perfect when the season ends a little more than a month from now.
The Patriots improved to 5-0 Tuesday, clobbering the Adams Central Jets 154-190 at Portland Country Club.
“We feel pretty good,” said Jesse Shawver, the lone senior on the varsity squad. “It’s a solid start for us. We’ve gotten some of our tough matches out of the way.
“We want to finish up 14-0.”
Shawver said the biggest win for the team came last week by four strokes over the rival Delta Eagles. Jay County never allowed the Jets (3-3) to have any designs on being that close Tuesday.
Playing at No. 1 and No. 2 on the day Jesse Shawver and Nathan McClung built a six-stroke lead over Spencer Lewis and Casey Landis of Adams Central on the first hole of the day — the 348-yard, par-4 10th. The Jets never challenged the home team, which posted its best score of the year without its best player.
With Tyler Johnston sitting out because of some soreness in his back, Adam Foster stepped to the forefront with the best round of his career. He shot a 34, two better than his 36 against Union City last year, to finish at 1-under par.
Foster opened with a birdie on No. 10, and added birdies on the par-5 14th hole and the par-4 16th. He also parred four holes, finishing his round with back-to-back pars.
“I started off good on 10 and made a birdie about 20 feet down the hill,” said Shawver. “I had two three-putts, six one-putts and one two-putt.”
McClung matched Foster with just 14 putts in his round, including an awesome 10-footer on the 18th hole.
McClung’s drive on the final hole — a 178-yard, par-3 — went well left and into the trees, just missing a trip into the creek.
Left with difficult chip to the hilltop green without much room to work with because of the front-left pin placement, the junior insisted it was an easy up-and-down. Then he proved his point.
McClung’s second shot landed just on the edge of the green and rolled gently about 10 feet past the hole. He left no doubt on his putt, dropping it into the dead center of the cup.
It was the third straight par for McClung, who had four overall in his round. He also had one birdie as he shot 40.
Shawver edged him by one stroke with a 39, and Ben Freeman and Alex Hunt were one back with 41s.
The top score by an Adams Central golfer was a 42 by Korbin Davis. Casey Landis shot a 48, and Spencer Lewis finished at 49.
Jeff Hardesty rounded out the Jets’ best score of the season with a 51, and Nate Coffield finished with a 54.
“What a decision you have to make when you have kids playing this well,” said Jay County coach Butch Gray. “I’ve coached for a lot of years and I can never remember throwing a 41 out.
“This is another step on the ladder as they try to get where they want to be. This is a group that pushes each other.”
Their score could drop even further if the Patriots could figure out the par-5 12th hole, which always seems to give them problems. They were just 20 strokes over par as a team in the round, and played No. 12 at 7-over.
Shawver made up for his double-bogey on the 12th with his effort on the other par-5.
His drive on the 520-yard 14th hole was well-hit, but ended up directly behind a tree in the right rough. He played the shot, saying he hoped to knock past the tree in front of him, through the branches of a few other trees in his path and get it somewhere near the hole.
Instead, Shawver’s shot made it through cleanly, hit the green and rolled over into the rough at the back-left of the green. His third shot came up about 10 feet short of the hole, and he rolled in the putt for his lone birdie of the day.
“I thought I had a pretty darn good drive, but I ended up under a tree,” said Shawver. “I got a good flight over the trees. Then I got up and down for birdie.
“It turned out all right.”
Shawver added pars on the 10th, 13th, 16th and 17th holes to post the second-best score of the day for Jay County.
Hunt and Freeman each had four pars as they finished with matching scores.
The Patriots will look to remain perfect when they visit Blackford Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Junior varsity
Jay County thumped Adams Central by nearly 50 strokes in junior varsity action, 218-264.
Josh Thornburg had by far the best score of any JV golfer as he shot a 47. James Brosher was next for Jay County with a 52, and the Jets’ score was a 59.
The Patriots (2-1) also got a 55 from Gray Suman, and 64 from Kyle Laux and a 69 from Bill Spahr.[[In-content Ad]]
