With tournament time right around the corner, Jay County’s girls golf team is right about where coach Tom Ferguson expected it to be.
The Patriots pulled to within one victory of .500 Wednesday night, holding on for a 213-216 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels. They will try to even their record at 4-4 tonight when they travel to Albany Golf Course to take on the Delta Eagles.
“We shot a 214 (Tuesday) night and a 213 tonight and that’s a good team score for us right now,” said Ferguson, whose team will play in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament Monday. “... We’re on our way down.”
Sophomore Trisha Champ carried the Patriots to victory as she tied the school record for the second time this year.
She shot a 2-over-par 37, matching the score she posted earlier this season at the Marion Invitational. Her score was 17 strokes better than Southside No. 1 player Kacey Bennett.
“Trisha played great, got off to a great start,” said Ferguson. “She’s playing good golf. She’s right where she should be.”
Champ opened in style starting on the third hole, hitting four nice shots for a par. Then she played the 290-yard, par-4 fourth hole to perfection.
She cut the corner on the dog-leg left, leaving herself in the dead center of the fairway about 30 yards away from the green. With the pin sitting near the front of the sloping green she hit a wonderful second shot, landing the ball on the fringe and letting it roll up to within three feet. From there she rolled in the birdie putt.
Champ parred the 349-yard, par-4 fifth hole, then left her drive on the 401-yard, par-5 sixth sitting in the right-hand rough about 150 yards out.
Instead of going at the pin, she avoided the bunkers which protect the green and rolled her approach to the front of the fringe. She knocked her chip pin high and drained another putt for her second birdie of the day to move to 2-under par.
Champ went bogey, bogey, double-bogey over the next three holes, but bounced back with pars on her final two — the first and second — to tie the school-record score.
“Last year at this point when she was on the verge of a good round she was a ball of nerves,” said Ferguson. “Tonight she was still smiling after she double bogeyed, even though she was frustrated. I want her frustrated, but not mad. She’s definitely gained some experience.”
Ashley Bunch and Alissa McMillan each had pars on the sixth hole as they finished with the next two best scores for the Patriots.
Bunch struggled to 18 strokes on the first two holes, but came back strong. She totaled four bogeys to go along with the par for a 55.
McMillan added three bogeys and finished with a 59.
“Bunch hit really good irons tonight, better than I’ve seen for a while,” said Ferguson. “She had a minimum of four penalties. I know she had three out of bounds and one in the water and still came in with a 55. You take those eight strokes away and she’s probably shot the best round of her life.”
Cindy Muhlenkamp had a couple of bogeys as she rounded out the team score with a 62. Brittney Lewis finished with a 63.
Foreign exchange student Sophie Giuliardi had the top score for the Rebels with a 49. Marissa Beaty had a 52, and Brittany Turner shot 61.
Junior varsity
Jay County won the junior varsity match over Southside 249-300.
Miranda Denney, returning to action after missing several weeks with an injury, shot a 56 to lead the Patriots. Ivy Simons followed with a 61.
Amanda Barnett shot 65, Jennifer Hunt finished with a 67 and Brittany Schlater had a 71.[[In-content Ad]]
