Jay Co. falls to Highland

Alyssa Rigby picked up the only win for the Jay County High School girls tennis team Tuesday as it fell 4-1 to the visiting Anderson Highland Scots.

Rigby rolled through her match at No. 3 singles, winning four of the first five games. She went on to top Charlette Condon 6-3, 6-1.

Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman bounced back from a first-set defeat to force a third, but lost their No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Megan Hunter and Michaela Hammel.

At No. 2 singles Mariah Clark held a 5-4, first-set lead before dropping nine of the next 10 games in a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Janine Kabir. In the No. 1 singles match Kayla Martin fell 6-1, 6-1 against Mercy Scott.

Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth dropped the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, 6-3 to Brittany Harris and Rachel Buck.

The Patriots won the junior varsity match 6-2 over Highland with Brittany White turning in a shutout win at No. 1 singles. Other singles victories came from Joni Degler and Rachel Ray, and doubles wins came from the teams of Chelsea Kimmel and Jessica Ooten, Alicia Degler and Dezi Clay, and Jeanette Thomas and Lissa Simms.

Softball loses to Marion

MARION - The Patriots scored all of their runs in the first inning in a 7-3 loss to the Marion Giants.

Jay County (2-8) went up 3-0 in the top of the first inning only to have the Giants even the score in the bottom. Marion took the lead with one run in the third inning, and added three in the fourth for the final margin.

Rachelle Jackson took the Patriots allowed six unearned runs, allowing four runs - one earned - on three hits and four walks in three innings.

Danielle Wellman had a double, two RBIs and a run, and Lexie Gierhart finished 2-for-3 with a run. Kendra Younger added a double and an RBI, and Laura Castillo singled and scored a run.

The Jay County junior varsity team lost 25-10 at home to the Monroe Central Golden Bears. Paige Alsip had two hits and three RBIs in the defeat, and Cortney Myers added two hits and two RBIs.

Smith, Houck lead EJ

MUNCIE - Malarie Houck and Tasya Smith each won a pair of events to lead the East Jay Middle School girls track team to a 67-33 win over the host Delta Eagles. Zane Shreve won two events as the boys team lost 60-40.

Houck took the top spot in the 100 hurdles for the EJMS girls in 18.3 seconds, and also won the 200 dash in 27.9. Smith's victories came in the 100 dash in 13.6 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 5 ½ inches.

Shreve took the boys 200 dash in 25.8, and won the high jump by clearing the bar at 4 feet, 10 ½ inches. Nicholas Leuthold was first in the 400 dash in 1:03.8, and Michael Bruggeman took the discus with a toss of 83 feet, 2 inches.

Other wins for the girls team came from Amber Huelskamp in the high jump at 4 feet, 3 inches, Rachel Vogler in the discus at 66 feet, 3 inches and Abigail Johnson in the 1,600 run with a time of 6 minutes 0.43 seconds.

Winget wins pair

DUNKIRK - Sean Winget turned in two victories for the West Jay boys track team Tuesday in a 52-48 win over visiting Selma.

Winget led the Eagles to the win by finishing first in the 100-meter dash and 200 dash. Dustin Smith added a victory in the 110 hurdles.

The other three WJMS first-place efforts came in the field events with Andrew Eley winning the shot put, Daniel Walter taking the discus and James Williams topping the field in the long jump.[[In-content Ad]]
