When the Jay County summer swimmers travel to South Adams Saturday, they will do so with a perfect season on the line.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team guaranteed that opportunity Monday, capping an undefeated dual meet season with an 805-248 trouncing of North Adams Central at Portland Pool. The defending Wabash Valley Conference champions will seek a second straight title in Berne Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
Monday's win came with two more team records falling as Jay County won 53 individual events and all but one of the 19 contested relays.
The 9-10-year-old girls quartet of Cori Stone, Amelia Freeman, Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr earned one of the records, knocking down a 14-year-old mark. They finished the 100-meter freestyle relay in 1-minute, 8.87 seconds to take down the 1993 record set by Taylor Fullenkamp, Janelle Johnston, Cassie Golden and Abby Arnold by just over a half-second.
Sam Miller set another record in the 15-and-older boys division.
After breaking the 50-meter freestyle record against Randolph County July 2, he dropped the team record again and set a new pool mark Monday at 25.86.
Jay County spread the wealth against North Adams Central with 33 swimmers each winning at least one event.
Three triple-event winners, including Alex Bader, led the way. Bader did her damage in the 8-and-younger girls division, winning the long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.
Caitlin Mark picked up victories in the 11-12-year-old girls butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle, and Richard Osterholt finished first in the 13-14-year-old boys long freestyle, individual medley and short freestyle.
Record breakers Sophie Bader, Anne Vormohr and Sam Miller chipped in with two victories apiece. Sydney Mathias, Brandt Pearson, Noah Hummel, Levi Hummel, Sok Vormohr, Radney Pearson, Mary Hudson, Wiley Young, Michelle Landfair, Cori Vormohr and Aaron Hudson also each won two events.
Adding single wins were Freeman, Audrey Shreve, Alex Bullard, Katy Smeltzer, Sammi Compton, Julie Valentine, Adam Abbott, Zach James, Zane Shreve, Marissa Murrell, Eme Miller, Aly Miller, Caleb Hummel, Tina Gingrasso, Caitlin Ruchgy and Tom McCord.[[In-content Ad]]
