Jay Co. finishes perfect (07/12/05)
Summer Swim
Not only are the Jay County swimmers record breaking, they’re perfect too.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team finished off a perfect dual-meet season Monday night with an 895-181 thumping of Randolph County. And the 8-and-younger girls broke their own record in the process.
Katy Smeltzer, Sophie Bader, Amelia Freeman and Anne Vormohr, who set a new record in the 8-and-younger girls medley relay last week, didn’t let the mark stand for very long. Just four days after taking down a 13-year-old record the group lowered its own mark with a time of 1-minute, 33.68 seconds.
Thursday’s record time was 1:34.34, and the record prior to this season was 1:34.47.
In addition to breaking the record, Bader was one of seven Jay County swimmers to win three events in the regular-season finale. She was first in the 8-and-younger girls long freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.
Levi Hummel also won three events in the 8-and-younger division, taking the long freestyle, butterfly and short freestyle.
Jay County doubled up in two other age groups, with Caitlin Mark and Radney Pearson each winning a trio of events for the 9-10-year-olds and Lindsey Vesperry and Joseph Vormohr doing the same in the 15-and-older division.
Mark’s victories came in the girls individual medley, breaststroke and short freestyle, and Pearson was the winner in the boys butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle. Vesperry took the girls long freestyle, individual medley and short freestyle, and Vormohr reached the wall first in the boys long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Cori Vormohr also won threeevents, leading the field in the 13-14-year-old girls butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle.
Anne Vormohr led a long list of double-event winners, which included four from the 11-12-year-old division and three from the 13-14-year-old group. Alysha Miller, Michaela Long, Neal Fennig and Richard Osterholt each picked up two wins for the 11-12-year-olds, and Lauren Murrell Sam Miller and Aaron Hudson posted two wins apiece for the 13-14-year-olds.
Also winning two events each were Cydney Huey and Shane Stein.
Jay County got single wins from Rhianon Mills, Sok Vormohr, Adam Young, Zane Shreve, Eme Miller, Katie Simmons, Lucas Holcomb, Caleb Hummel, Michelle Landfair, Perry Hull, Chance Milligan, Kristen Foreman, Stephanie Skiver, Krisa Sipe and Nathaniel Imel.
Jay County will look to cap its perfect season Saturday when it hosts the Wabash Valley Conference Championships beginning at 9 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
