PORTLAND — It wasn’t a matter of whether or not the Patriots were going to blow the game open. It was only a matter of when.

Jay County’s girls basketball team used a 16-2 run bridging the first and second quarters, building a 15-point lead on the way to its 76-46 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

“We came out tonight after a tough game at Fort Wayne South and played a lot more relaxed,” said Jay County coach Kirk Comer, who picked up his first win on the Patriot bench. “I think the home crowd helped out. I think being at home gave us some energy — it definitely did me.

“We got off to a good start. I knew if we got off to a good start we’d gain confidence and just build from there. I think that’s what we did.”

Jay County (1-1) scored the first five points of the game, only to have the Rebels cut the deficit to 7-6. Then the home team’s run began.

Sarah Dirksen hit a lay-up with 2:56 to go in the first quarter, and Markie Runyon added one 30 seconds later. Southside’s Fallon Shively managed to score to make the score 11-8, but the next 12 points all came from Jay County. Jamie Bruggeman scored five of those points, and Runyon added four more as the Patriot lead ballooned to 23-8.

Cassandra Huelskamp picked up a career milestone during another big Jay County run just minutes later. Following a Dirksen hoop, the freshman scored her first varsity points on a 3-pointer with 3:37 on the clock.

Lisa Weitzel nailed three free throws, and Leah Gasparovic added a pair to complete a 10-0 run as the Patriots posted a 40-15 halftime lead.

The Rebels (0-1) scored 10 straight points during one stretch of the second half, but never came closer than 23 points after the break.

Jamie Bruggeman led the effort with 20 points, which included 3-of-6 from 3-point range. She was just one rebound shy of a double-double, and also had a blocked shot.

“I thought she did a good job,” said Comer. “To me it was a quiet 20. I didn’t realize she had 20. I thought she showed great leadership.

“We’re still making mistakes, but I thought as far as overall team effort everybody I put in there had a lot of positives. That’s only going to make us better down the road.”

Markie Runyon added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting as the Patriots improved from 26 percent from the field in the season-opening loss to Fort Wayne South Side to 45 percent against the Rebels.

Theresa Reinhart scored nine points, and Weitzel and Gasparovic each had seven.

Another freshman, Abby Loy, got her first varsity score in the second half. It came on a free throw with 1:19 remaining in the contest.

Dirksen had six rebounds, and Chelsea DeBoy added five as the Patriots outrebounded Southside 39-33. They had been outworked on the glass by 17 boards in their first game.

Sara Garringer dished out four assists, and Renae Laux added three. Jay County also went to the line 38 times and knocked down 23 free throws (61 percent).

Day-Ell Foster was the only Rebel in double figures as she scored 13 points before fouling out.

Brooke Bailey and Teshia Olden also fouled out in the contest.

Ty’Ronda Benning added nine points and had team highs of eight rebounds and two assists.

Southside shot 41 percent from the field, but also had problems holding onto the ball as it finished with 28 turnovers. Comer said his team will also have to work on taking care of the ball before next weekend’s games against Bellmont and Winchester after giving it away 24 times against the Rebels.

“I thought we had a lot of turnovers considering they didn’t press us very much,” he said. “We’re still making the silly turnovers. It is hard to keep your intensity when you have a big lead, but mature teams do that.

“No doubt about it, we have to cut down our turnovers and we have to knock down our free throws.”

Junior varsity

Jay County held Muncie Southside scoreless in the first quarter and rolled to a 52-13 victory in the junior varsity contest Friday.

The Patriots were up 11-0 at the end of the first period. They scored 19 points in the second and never allowed more than five points in a quarter as they cruised to 2-0 on the season.

Miranda Betz led a balanced scoring attack with eight points. Whitney Homan had seven, and Danielle Jackson and Cassandra Huelskamp each added six.

Mary Spencer and Katie Runyon added five points apiece.

Kaylee Smith and Keisha Murphy scored four points each for Muncie Southside.[[In-content Ad]]
