A steady day from the entire team gave Jay County a 165-177 victory over the Blackford Bruins in golf action Monday.

Tyler Johnston and Jesse Shawver tied for the top Patriot score on the evening, each shooting a 40. They shared match medalist honors with the Bruins’ Adam Clamme.

Alex Hunt was just one stroke behind with a 41, and Adam Foster rounded out the varsity scoring with a 44. Ben Freeman shot a 46.

The Patriots, now 8-4 this season, will play Muncie Southside and Southern Wells at Muncie Southside Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Nathan McClung led the junior varsity Patriots Monday with a 40, but it was not enough as they lost to Blackford 183-193.

The next best junior varsity score was 10 strokes behind McClung, as Josh Hall hit the clubhouse with a 50. Josh Thornburg shot a 51, Adam Freeman had a 52, Ryan Fritze and Bill Spahr each scored 58s, and James Brosher had a 62.

The JV team is currently 6-2.

Hess wins regional

Jay County High School sophomore Kurtis Hess had an outstanding day at the USA Wrestling Central Regional Championships, winning the title at 140 pounds this weekend.

Hess won the Greco-Roman tournament held in Anderson Sunday, defeating wrestlers from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan en route to the finals. The Patriot had no problem in the championship match against Ryan Karasiewicz of Michigan, crushing him with a 14-2 technical fall.

Hess also performed well in the freestyle half of the tournament Saturday. He was unbeaten through the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals and consolation finals.

Prescott update

Jay County native Rodney Prescott, a professional jockey, recently closed out a strong spring meet at Indiana Downs race track near Shelbyville.

Prescott, who now lives in southern Indiana, finished third in earnings and tied for third in wins during the inaugural Thoroughbred meet at Indiana Downs, which wrapped up May 26 and began April 11.

Prescott was the most active jockey at Indiana Downs, with 228 starts. Horses ridden by Prescott won $353,366, with 27 wins, 29 seconds and 34 thirds.

Sidney LeJeune Jr. and Orlando Mojica were 1-2 in the jockey standings, with 38 wins each. LeJeune’s mounts won $410,264, while Mojica won $392.833.

Prescott has been among the leading jockeys in Indiana and Kentucky over the past few years, racking up wins at Turfway in Florence, Ky., Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., and Hoosier Park in Anderson.

Sports banquet

The Jay County High School spring sports banquet will be Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m. in the JCHS commons.

Baseball and softball players are asked to bring casseroles and side dishes, track athletes are asked to bring desserts, and tennis players and golfers should bring salads. For more information, call (260) 726-9806.

JCHS offers physicals

Physicals for middle school and high school athletes will be held at the Jay County High School gym Thursday at 6 p.m.

Physical forms must be completed by parents and returned to the high school prior to Thursday in order for students to attend. The cost is $15.[[In-content Ad]]
