Jay Co. golfers second

WINCHESTER — The Jay County High School boys golf team placed second in an invitational for the second straight week.
Evan Mathias shot an 81 to lead the Patriots to a team score of 337 Saturday at the Winchester Golf Club.
Richmond was first with 321, and Union County was third with 345.
Zach Fullenkamp was close behind Mathias, posting a round of 83 on the par-72 course. Austin Wendel shot an 86 for the No. 3 score for the Patriots, and Jay Houck was one shot behind Wendel.
Graham Haines also competed for Jay County, shooting an 89, as all five Patriot golfers and sub-90 rounds.
Tribe holds off Tigers
VERSAILLES — Since Fort Recovery and Versailles suspended their game after four innings April 29 because of weather, the Tribe saw its winning streak come to an end.
It also started a new one.
The Fort Recovery baseball team kept the Tigers off the board Monday to hang on for the 3-0 win in the completion of the rain-shortened game.
Jackson Hobbs, who started the game a week ago, pitched again to earn the complete-game shutout.
He struck out one batter Monday to add to the pair he fanned before the game was suspended.
Fort Recovery (15-1, 3-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) got its runs April 29 when Blake Boughman reached on an error, Jacob Muhlenkamp bunted for a single and Kent Retz sacrificed the runners into scoring position.
Then, Hobbs doubled to right field to drive in Boughman and Muhlenkamp.
The Indians added one more in the third when Mitch Stammen and Cole Wendel hit back-to-back singles and two batters later Boughman grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Stammen.
Versailles tops Tribe
VERSAILLES — The Fort Recovery softball team is at the wrong end of a double-digit streak.
The Indians lost to Versailles 12-0 Monday, pushing their losing streak to 15.
Fort Recovery (0-15) managed five hits but couldn’t plate a run. Jackie Fullenkamp, Devin Post, Logan Ranly, Whitney Will and Audra Metzger all had singles for the Indians.
Ashley Homan took the loss for the Indians, giving up seven earned runs on ten hits while walking four.
In recent games, the Indians lost to 14-1 to Parkway on Thursday, 9-1 to New Bremen on Friday, and dropped games to Marion Local (21-1) and Ansonia (15-0) on Saturday.
Stars beat Blackford
MARION — Cal Clouser shot a 41 to lead the South Adams golf team to a 188-191 victory Monday over the Blackford Bruins at Club Run.
Clouser earned match medalist honors, besting Blake Thiery by two strokes and teammate Derek Fox by three.
Brad Green shot a 47, and Jacob Rife posted a 56 to round out the team score for the Starfires.
Nick Wurster also competed for South Adams, shooting a 57.
For the Bruins, Colten Twibell posted a round of 48, and Drake Congan and Evan Jones had matching rounds of 50.
SA tops Bulldogs
BERNE — Brittany Potts and Maddy Kloepper both picked up singles victories Monday as the South Adams girls tennis team beat the New Haven Bulldogs 3-2.
After dropping the first set 6-4, Potts recovered to win the final two 7-6, 6-4 over Taylor Erdly at No. 1 singles. At No. 3 singles Kloepper beat Haley Shuler in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
South Adams got its third and final win at No. 2 doubles, as Ericka Miller and Kara Seffernick needed three sets to beat Olivia Casterline and Brandi Mace, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1.
Maddie Graber lost to Hanna Cordes at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Kylea Pierce and Riley Leichty lost to Audrey Fritcha and Rachel Meredith 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
In reserve action, the Starfires and Bulldogs tied, 4-4.
MaJena Gerber and Treva Clingenpeel picked up singles victories for South Adams. Korinna Schindler and Caralie Farlow teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles and Fatima Sandoval joined Riley Thompson to win at No. 3 doubles.

ALEXANDRIA — After losing the first game 16-9, the Jay County junior varsity baseball team beat the Alexandria Tigers 10-4 to split a doubleheader Saturday.
Jay County scored two runs in the first and added one in the second before Alexandria hit the scoreboard with a run in the third. Leading 3-1, the Patriots scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth to break the game open.
The Tigers answered with one run in the fifth and a pair in the sixth.
Austin Beasley pitched the Patriots to the win, striking out nine and walking three. Andrew Ferguson belted a triple and Chandler Woodward added a double.
In game one, the Patriots scored nine runs in the fourth inning to knot tie the game, but couldn’t keep the Tigers off the board in the late innings.[[In-content Ad]]
