Jay Co. grads score victories (02/17/07)

Collegiate Check-up

Two former Jay County runners picked up first-place finishes at recent indoor track meets.

Jill Roughia, a 2005 graduate, won her only race Feb. 9 at the Ohio Northern Invitational. Alyssa Johnson, who graduated in 2006, led off for a winning relay team a day later at the Anderson Runners Forum Invitational.

Roughia, a sophomore at Huntington University, scored a solid win in the 800-meter run. She finished in 2-minutes, 29.83 seconds, more than a full two seconds ahead of Amanda Reyher of Wheeling Jesuit, to help lead the Foresters to a first-place finish at the six-team meet.

Johnson, who runs for Taylor University, took care of the opening leg of the distance medley at Anderson as her team posted a time of 12:53.35. That winning effort was good enough to earn them a berth in the NAIA Indoor Championships.

The freshman also turned in a runner-up finish in the 1,000-meter run. She crossed the line in 3:25.82, second only to teammate and Winchester graduate Tabitha Bogue.

Nicole VanSkyock, a 2004 graduate of JCHS, also ran Feb. 10 at the Anderson Runners Forum Invitational for the host Ravens. She finished in 5:34.62 for fifth in the 1,600-meter run.

Kurtis Hess

Jay County - 2006

Scored a couple of upsets to finish as the 149-pound runner-up Feb. 12 at the Mid-States Conference Wrestling Tournament.

Hess, a freshman at Wabash College, entered the tournament unseeded before making his run to the championship match. He upset No. 3 seed Nick Wolf 8-4 in the opening round, then scored a stunning pin in 1:52 over second-seeded Kyle Pittman in their semifinal match.

He dropped his title bout 12-1 to Byron Sweet of Manchester to finish in second place.

The effort from Hess helped lead the Little Giants to the team title with 143 points, 13 ahead of Olivet.

Tyler Niekamp

Fort Recovery - 2003

Helped the Findlay University men's basketball team, now ranked No. 3 in the NCAA's Division II, continue its national best 54-game home winning streak.

Niekamp and the Oilers (23-1, 15-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) won twice on their home floor this week, defeating Mercyhurst 86-60 Thursday and Grand Valley State 76-62 Feb. 10.

The senior hit both of his field-goal attempts, each from 3-point range, against Grand Valley State as he finished with seven points. He also grabbed four rebounds, including a pair of the offensive end.

Niekamp finished with four points, two rebounds and two assists in the win over Mercyhurst.

Kyle Weaver

Jay County - 2003

Was part of a runner-up finish for the Wabash College men's swim team at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Weaver teamed with Tony Caldwell, Robert Dent and Blaine Cooper-Surma to take second place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.71 at the event held Feb. 8-10.

The senior also scored a couple of top-10 individual finishes. He placed eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22 seconds flat, and matched that effort by finishing in 52.70 for eighth place in the 100 butterfly.

Weaver also took 19th in the 100 freestyle at 48.94.[[In-content Ad]]
