Jay Co. netters fall to Spartans (08/30/04)

CONNERSVILLE — There was no rain in Connersville. But there was no win for Jay County either.

The Patriot boys tennis team escaped the wet local weather Saturday, but dropped a 4-1 decision to the host Spartans.

No. 1 doubles pair Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby accounted for the only Jay County win.

The duo got off to a slow start, but rallied past Kyle Schlicht and Jason Arnold 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. They are 7-1 on the season, and are undefeated in dual meets at 5-0.

Kurtis Hess (7-1) took his first loss of the season at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Chris Bloom. In other singles matches Jeff Sims lost 6-3, 6-0 to Michael McKinney and Joshua Ludy fell 6-2, 6-2 to Tim Jeffries.

At No. 2 doubles Adam Arnold and Travis Smith dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Conner Gable and Zach Ward.

Jay County (3-2, 0-1 Olympic Athletic Conference) also fell in junior varsity action by a 3-1 score despite four close matches.

Todd McCowan took the lone Patriot victory as he topped Clayton Judd 8-5 at No. 3 singles.

McCowan also played No. 1 singles where he lost by an 8-7 (7-1) count to Adam Bouleware.

Jason Crouch lost to Mitch Brown 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, and James Heare and Thomas McCowan fell to Jacob Bumbalough and Kyle Angeles 8-7 (7-3).

Jay County will stay in the OAC for its next match at Muncie Southside Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots finish 1-2

MONROEVILLE — The Jay County volleyball team didn’t go down quietly, but still managed just one victory in three matches at the Heritage Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots (3-6) made quick work of Fort Wayne Canterbury for the lone win of the day by a 25-10, 25-22 score. In other matches they lost to New Haven 13-25, 25-18, 25-17 and Heritage 25-13, 21-25, 25-13.

Junior Kelly Sautbine had the big day for Jay County overall, finishing as the team leader with 32 points and 27 digs. She also had six aces.

Sautbine had team highs of 14 points and seven digs in the victory over Canterbury. She was trailed by senior Jamie Walker, who had 13 points — seven on aces — six digs and two kills.

Julie Sours had four kills, and Erin St. Myers added a pair.

Sautbine was tops on the team in points and digs again against New Haven, finishing with 13 and 12 respectively.

Erin St. Myers had nine digs and eight kills. Shannon O’Dell also had eight kills, Julie Sours had six points and Miranda Tingley totaled 20 assists.

Sophomore Theresa Reinhart came up with 10 digs and five kills against Heritage. She also scored three points, all on aces.

Walker had 12 digs, and Janae Roush added 11. O’Dell had six kills, and Leah Gasparovic and Sautbine each had five points.

Jay County will host Fort Wayne South Side Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Horse show

The Horsein’ Around Barn Buddies, a booster organization for Delaware County 4-H horse and pony clubs, is sponsoring a horse contesting show Sunday, Sept. 5 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.

The event begins with warm-up poles at 9 a.m.

There is a total of $500 added to the payback amounts, which will be 80 percent of the entry fees paid.
