Jay Co. netters lose 1st (09/01/06)

ANDERSON - A long night of tennis ended in the first defeat of the season for the Jay County boys tennis team.

Kyle Simmons earned the only Patriot victory as the team fell 4-1 to the Anderson Highland Scots. Jay County is now 4-1 on the year.

After waiting about a half-hour for the courts to dry the match opened at Highland High School. But after only 30 minutes of play rain took over the court again, forcing a move to the indoor tennis courts at Anderson Sports Complex.

Simmons was the only Patriot to survive the long evening, rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory over James Davis at No. 3 singles. Josh Ludy also went three sets at No. 1 singles, but fell to Anthony Duquaine 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in his first dual-match loss of the season.

Phil Powell dropped the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2 to Zach McCurdy.

In No. 1 doubles action Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan fell 6-3, 7-5 to Rohan Patel and Brady Roundtree. At No. 2 doubles Mark Alberson and Adam Horn lost 6-3, 6-3 to Lance Faivor and Zach Welborn.

No. 4 Raiders slam spikers

The Class 2A No. 4 Wapahani Raiders made quick work of the Jay County volleyball team Thursday, 25-20, 25-11, 25-17.

Erica Clark finished with eight assists, four points, three digs, two kills and a block for the Patriots (4-7). Theresa Reinhart had 14 digs, followed by six from Shelby Rines.

Sarah Westgerdes notched six kills, and Ashley Horn scored seven points.

Jay County also dropped the junior varsity match, 25-22, 25-20, against the Raiders.

Kelsey Wood had five kills and three digs to lead the Patriots. Chelsea Grady came up with seven digs, Kelci Reed scored six points and Ashley Langenkamp had six assists.

Eagles roll over SA

The West Jay Middle School volleyball team had a successful debut Thursday, clobbering the South Adams Starfires 25-5, 25-10.

Taylor Burris led the effort, scoring 10 of her 11 points in the opening game. Winona Westlake added nine points, and Breanna Dahlstrom scored five.[[In-content Ad]]
