Jay Co. netters lose 8th straight (05/04/04)

The slump continued Monday for the Jay County girls tennis team.
Playing without three varsity starters the Patriots lost 4-1 to the host Adams Central Jets. It was the eighth straight defeat for them after opening the season with a win over Blackford.
Angie Stults picked up the lone victory for Jay County, defeating Betsy Goulet 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The Jets’ Lindsey Cloninger shut out Whitney Schemenaur 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Megan Smith topped the Patriots’ Stephanie Homan 6-4, 7-5 in the other singles contest.
Jay County (1-8) also dropped both doubles matches as it was missing the normal No. 1 doubles pair of Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers, and No. 2 doubles player Erin Schmiesing.
Schmiesing’s partner Chelsea Reff stepped up to No. 1 doubles along with Brianne Morrical and took a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Ashley Fiechter and Amanda Isch. At No. 2 doubles Jenae Horn and Jessica DeRome fell to Annie Kine and Jessica Andrews 6-3, 6-3.
The Patriots will try to stop the losing streak Wednesday when they host the Muncie Central Bearcats at 4:30 p.m.
The Patriots also lost by a 4-1 score to Adams Central in junior varsity action, with Annika Kuitzsch scoring the lone win. She topped Laura Schaadt 8-5 at No. 2 singles.
In the other singles matches Amanda Hicks lost to Natalie Mitchel 9-7, and Shonda Sutton fell to Lilah Fisher 8-3.
In doubles action Brittany Lewis and Chatchanok Sririthara dropped an 8-5 decision to Suzi Cruz and Jessica Bertsch. Lewis and Dani Parks lost at No. 1 doubles to Mary Anne Mishler and Kari Ellenbeger after Parks was forced to retire with an ankle injury.
WJ girls win again
Brittney O’Dell and Lindsey Current each scored a pair of wins Monday as the West Jay girls track team stayed undefeated with a 69-30 victory over Montpelier. Chris Moore and Brady Mills combined for all six of the boys team’s individual wins as it triumphed 58-42.
O’Dell paced a West Jay sweep in the 200-meter dash, finishing first in front of teammates Trisha Champ and Kayla Clevenger. She scored her other victory in the discus as the Eagles improved to 6-0 on the year.
She also teamed with Champ, Clevenger and Jennifer Buckland to take first in the 4x100-meter relay.
Current added her two wins in a pair of field events. She was first in the high jump and the long jump.
Clevenger took the victory in the 100-meter dash, finishing ahead of O’Dell and Champ. Lauren Murrell was first in the 800-meter run, and Kelci Reed took the 1,600-meter run.
Weaver, Reed, Buckland and Brittney Burris also took the 4x400-meter relay.
Moore continued to carry the West Jay boys teams as he picked up four more victories. He was victorious in the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds, the 800-meter run in 2-minutes, 19 seconds and the hurdles in 18.3.
He also grabbed the long jump win at 15 feet, 21/2 inches.
Mills earned the other two individual wins for the Eagles, taking the 400-meter dash in 1:05. He was also the winner of the 1,600-meter run in 5:34.
