The Jay County girls golf team finished its season Saturday with a ninth-place finish at the Norwell Sectional at Parlor City Golf Course in Bluffton.

The Patriots finished with a time score of 468, while Homestead took the victory in the 11-team events with a 372. Concordia was second at 375, and the host Knights placed third at 379.

Sarah Oswalt of Southern Wells was the match medalist with an 82, one better than Bellmont’s Nicole Geyer.

Cara Geesaman was the top golfer for Jay County for the second straight meet, ending a solid week of action. She was also second on the team in Monday’s Olympic Athletic Conference meet, earning her all-OAC honorable mention.

At the sectional meet the senior started off a little slow, but put up a trio of bogeys on the fourth through sixth holes. She came in with a 54.

Again on the back nine Geesaman opened with an eight before regrouping on the 11th hole. She scored the first of her two pars on the par-4 11th.

She added a bogey on the par-5 12th and scored her second par on the par-3 15th to finish with a 109.

Deanna Drinkut, played even on the par-3 8th and 13th holes, and added two bogeys on the way to a 114.

Brianne Morrical, who also earned honorable mention, was four strokes back with a 118. She had a pair of bogeys on the front nine, and added a par on the 13th.

Blake Hendricks shot a 127 to round out the team scoring, and Angie Stultz came in with a 130.

Jay 2-1 at Franklin

The Jay County volleyball team followed up an outstanding effort in a loss to Blackford Thursday with a 2-1 performance at the Franklin Community Tournament Saturday.

The Patriots scored a 23-21, 17-21, 21-13 victory over host Franklin, and also defeated South Decatur 21-9, 21-18. Their lone loss of the day came in a tight match against Greenfield, 22-20, 21-17.

Jay County (7-12) trailed Franklin 20-13 in the first game, but Erin St. Myers served the team back to a 20-20 tie on the way to the win. St. Myers finished with 11 points and eight digs in the match.

Sara Hough had 12 kills, Becki Beeler notched nine digs, and Sarah Ainsworth dished our 18 assists.

Hough led the team in kills in each of the other two matches, finishing the weekend with a team-high 28. Ashley Overla was next with 12, including five against South Decatur.

Beeler had 22 digs in the three matches. Julie Sours had 18, with eight coming against Greenfield, and Hough finished with 17.

St. Myers led the team with 17 points, followed by Overla’s 14 and Hough’s 11. Ainsworth had 50 assists on the weekend.

The Patriots’ next match is at South Adams Tuesday at 6 p.m.

EJ 8th rallies after half

The East Jay eighth grade football team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Huntington Riverview Saturday 12-6. The seventh grade team fell to a 13-0 defeat.

The eighth grade team gave up a special-teams touchdown in the first quarter and trailed by a 6-0 margin at halftime. However, the defense did not allow a point, and tied the game all by itself.

Coty Bragg recovered a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter to pull the Chiefs even at 6-6. Michael Jobe was responsible for the hit which caused the fumble.

Then in the fourth Justin Mann found Jobe in the middle with an assist from Clint Muhlenkamp. Muhlenkamp tipped the pass into Jobe’s hands for the winning score.

Mann finished 6-of-10 passing for 55 yards. East Jay also had 168 yards on the ground.

Jobe (10 tackles) and Muhlenkamp (nine tackles) paced the outstanding defensive effort.

The seventh grade team (2-1) gave up scores in the second and fourth quarters and couldn’t find the end zone itself. Jared Reynard had a blocked punt in the contest. Mitch Martyne, Dexter Shreve and Cameron Pfeifer each recovered a fumble.[[In-content Ad]]
