Jay Co. places fourth (03/01/04)

Jay County earned three individual wins this weekend, but its middle school swim teams each finished fourth at the Connersville Invitational.

The Jay County girls were fourth with 224 points, with Muncie North first at 268 and Centerville second at 264. The boys team scored 167 points, and the host Spartans took first with 286.

Cori Vormohr paced the girls team with two victories and two new records.

She won the butterfly in 1-minute, 5.58 seconds, and took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.45. She broke Abby Arnold’s team records in both events.

Vormohr also teamed with Jessica Bullock, Michelle Landfair and Kelci Reed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:03.41. Vormohr, Landfair Reed and Ivy Simons were second in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:18.74.

Simons added a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:23.28, and Bullock followed her in fourth.

Steven Kelly picked up the lone win for the boys team. He was first in diving with 132.10 points.

Kelly also joined Spencer Baker, Chance Milligan and Lance VanSkyock to take second in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:30.48.

VanSkyock was third in both of his individual events. He finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:27.12 and the 200-yard individual medley in 3:03.45.

Turning in fifth-place finishes for Jay County were Landfair, Reed, Simons, Kelly, Milligan and Nathaniel Imel.

West Jay splits

The West Jay sixth grade boys basketball team split its games this weekend, defeating Montpelier 45-34 before dropping a 50-49 result to Hartford City.

The Eagles dominated Montpelier, leading 13-7 after the first quarter. They dominated the second quarter with a 19-3 scoring advantage to pull away for good.

Michael Daniels and Jake Omstead shared scoring honors with 10 points apiece. Taylor Farmer followed with nine.

West Jay (4-4) slipped behind against Hartford City, trailing by three at the half and by seven with one quarter to play. It scored 22 fourth-quarter points to rally, but fell just short in the one-point defeat.

Taylor Farmer paced the Eagles with 23 points, and Josh Beaty also had a huge game with 20 points.

Wrestling club

The Patriot Wrestling Club will hold practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. in the Jay County High School wrestling room.

Jumpers take third

The Gym City Jumpers cheerleading squads competed at the Jam Fest Super Nationals in Indianapolis recently, with both squads finishing third.

The Pee Wee quad was sixth out of eight teams in the opening day of competition, and finished third in the challenge round. The Youth squad was 10th out of 12 squads in day one, and also took third in the challenge round.

Karate in Fort

Fort Fitness-N-More in Fort Recovery is offering karate classes with instructor Kevin Evers.

Classes are on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. They are for anyone 5 years old and older, including adults.[[In-content Ad]]
