Jay Co. rolls to 6th straight win (07/09/04)

Local Roundup

If opposing teams want to stop the current winning streak, they may have to wait until next year.

The Jay County Summer Swim team won its sixth straight meet Thursday, defeating Union City 789-232 to improve to 10-2 on the year. It closes the dual meet season at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. against North Adams Central, a team it beat 870-192 in their previous meeting.

Matthew Dann, Sam Miller and Ashley Imel led Thursday’s destruction, each winning three events as Jay County took 48 out of 60 individual wins. The team had 33 different individual winners, and also took all 20 relays.

Dann grabbed his three victories in the 9-10-year-old boys long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle. Miller was first in the 13-14-year-old boys butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke, and Imel won the 15-and-older girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.

Ten more Jay County swimmers won two events apiece, including three in the 11-12-year-old division. Alysha Miller was first in the girls long and short freestyle, and Michelle Landfair and Aaron Hudson took the girls and boys butterfly and individual medley respectively.

Also picking up a pair of wins were Caitlin Mark, Annie Vormohr, Emilee Miller, Alex Sutton, Ivy Simons, Briann Saxman and Joseph Vormohr.

McGriff named trainer

Sara McGriff, the granddaughter of former Jay County High School athletics director Harold Schutz, has been named to the athletic training staff at the University of Toledo.

McGriff will be an assistant athletic trainer in charge of coordinating coverage of the women's basketball, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's tennis programs. She spent the previous two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia.

She earned her master’s degree in exercise science from Georgia, where she worked with the swimming and diving programs. The Bulldogs have finished second in the NCAA swimming and diving championships in each of the last two years, and have produced seven Olympians.

McGriff earned her undergraduate degree from Ball State, where she worked with the football, volleyball, gymnastics and tennis programs. She is the daughter of Randy and Nancy (Schutz) McGriff, and the granddaughter of Harold and Maxine Schutz.
