Jay Co. splits with Spartans, Rebels

MUNCIE — Mariah Hornaday finished with 26 kills Saturday as the Jay County High School volleyball team split matches against its former Olympic Athletic Conference rivals.
The Patriots defeated host Muncie Southside 26-24, 25-12 and then lost 16-25, 25-20, 25-21 to Connersville, a team it had beaten a couple of weeks earlier.
Hornaday had 13 kills and three blocks in the victory for JCHS (11-14) over the Rebels, and Tanner Martin added 14 assists and 11 points. Megan May served 16 points, Alyssa Rigby came up with 12 digs and Hannah Ainsworth added 10 digs.
Sierra Weatherhead finished with 11 digs, eight points and four aces in the loss to Connersville. Ainsworth had 12 points and six digs, and Maria Murphy notched eight kills.
Boys soccer loses
CONVERSE — The Patriots dropped their final match of the regular season Saturday 2-0 to the host Oak Hill Golden Eagles.
Jay County (4-11), which will play Delta in the opening round of the sectional Thursday, fell behind 1-0 on a goal by freshman Gerritt Taylor with 7:46 on the clock in the opening half. Michael Daugherty added the second Oak Hill goal with about 11 minutes to go in the game.
Dillon Ainsworth recorded 10 saves in the loss. The Patriots did not attempt a shot on goal.
JCHS also dropped the junior varsity game, 3-1, with its lone goal coming from Zach Fullenkamp.
Wellman earns honor
CARMEL — East Jay’s Megan Wellman led all local runners with her all-state effort Saturday at the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships.
Wellman, a seventh grader, finished 22nd in the small school girls division with a time of 11 minutes, 56 seconds.
The top 25 runners in each race earned all-state honors.
Emi Minnich followed Wellman in 53rd with a time of 12:22. Kelli Fortkamp was 125th in 13:29 ahead of Sophie Bader (135th - 13:36) and Erika Kunkler (141st - 13:43).
Jalen Ryder was the top EJMS boy with a time of 11:21 for 58th place. Michael Denney was 126th in 11:56 followed by Tyler Wendel (153rd - 12:18), Matthew Cox (155th - 12:21) and Adam Jutte (158th - 12:24).
In the junior varsity boys race Kyler Carvel of West Jay placed 16th in 11:55, and East Jay’s Tim Hein was 29th with a time of 12:15.[[In-content Ad]]
