PORTLAND — After a loss to Bluffton last week, the Jay County tennis team had lost five of its last six matches. Those difficulties are behind the team now.

The Patriots scored a second shutout win in as many nights Monday, defeating the Adams Central Jets 5-0. The victory, combined with a 5-0 win over the Blackford Bruins Monday, lifted Jay County back to the .500 mark on the year at 6-6.

“Two nights in a row,” said Jay County coach Barry Weaver. “How about that? We like it. We played well two nights in a row.”

The back-to-back victories showed a marked turn around from last week’s disappointing losses at South Adams and Bluffton. The Patriots are now doing a better job of closing out matches in the second set, and staying mentally focused if forced to a third.

No. 2 singles player Kentaro Ohgo has had no problems closing out wins since joining the team in action last week.

Ohgo (4-0) absolutely crushed Matt Bracey Tuesday. He easily tracked down every shot Bracey managed to hit across the net, and sent the ball back with torturous precision.

He won the first set 6-0, and was up 5-0 in the second when Bracey finally looked as if he might steal a game. He took a 40-15 lead and was serving to try to convert his double-game point.

However, Ohgo simply refused to make a mistake, and Bracey hit three consecutive shots into the net. Ohgo then finished off the match with a powerful return of Bracey’s final serve for a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Ohgo was on the court for just barely more than a half hour.

Derek Powell gave up just one more game than his teammate, cruising past Dylan Malone 6-1, 6-0. He hit winners of every kind and took advantage of Malone’s serving struggles in the victory.

Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson added the team’s third two-set win at No. 2 doubles. They defeated Dan Kaehr and Kreigh Aschliman 6-3, 7-5.

After winning five of the final six games in the first set, Feazell and Paxson jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second. Kaehr and Aschliman answered by winning four in a row for a 5-4 lead, but the Jay County pair decided Tuesday would not be a three-set night for them.

They won each of the next two games, leaving Feazell to serve for the match. He served his way to a 40-15 lead, and after missing on the first match point try Paxson grounded the Jets.

Feazell dropped in a second serve, which Adams Central returned with without a problem. But the Jet duo tried to sneak to the net after the return and Paxson made them pay with a winner right down the middle of the court to end the match.

“Hopefully some of (the improvement) is what we tried to do Saturday (in practice),” said Weaver. “We’ve come in prepared for these matches.

“They’re starting to believe that they can do things well. As with most any group, if they believe they can do things, they probably can.”

The No. 1s — Kurtis Hess at singles and Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans at doubles — took a little longer, but went on to complete the sweep for Jay County.

Hess (11-4) dropped the second set of his match against Brandon Barger before annihilating his opponent in the third. Hess crushed him 6-0 in the final set — giving up just one point as he served the final game — to complete a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win.

Rigby and Evans lost the second set after holding a 5-4 lead, but also came back strong in the third. The pair never trailed in the final set on they way to a 6-2, 5-7, 7-3 win.

“It’s fantastic to see some young guys coming through and winning a third set,” said Weaver. “That hasn’t exactly been our strong suit this season.”

Jay County will try to continue its success when it hosts Winchester Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Patriot junior varsity team got back on track after three consecutive losses with a 3-1 win over Adams Central.

Jay County (8-4) won both singles matches on the night with Wil Goodrich topping Nathan Aschliman 8-4 and Charlie Abbot knocking off Dustin Garwood 8-2. Adam Arnold and James Heare completed the win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 win over Jared Grandlienard and Jon Kuntzman.

Jeff Sims and Travis Smith dropped to Justin Kable and Alex Lengerich at No. 1 doubles 8-5.[[In-content Ad]]
