Jay Co. stops skid vs. Bears

PARKER CITY — A week ago, the Patriot baseball team avoided a fifth straight loss with a fifth-inning rally at Monroe Central. The softball team was happy to use the Golden Bears as their slump-buster as well.
Jay County High School erased a 2-1 deficit Tuesday with a seven-run fifth inning, halting a five-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over host Monroe Central.
Lexie Gierhart powered the Patriot offense as she finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Catherine Dunn added a single and two runs. Chelsea Tighe and Taylor Franklin each singled and scored a run.
Rachelle Jackson earned the win for JCHS (13-11), shutting out the Golden Bears over the final five innings after allowing single runs in the first and second. She struck out three batters, and only one of the runs against her was earned.

JC falls to Tigers
ALEXANDRIA — Jay County’s girls tennis team didn’t get the boost it was hoping for heading into the tournament, dropping its regular-season finale 5-0 Tuesday to the Alexandria Tigers.
The Patriots (6-9), who will host Union City at 5 p.m. Thursday in sectional semifinal action, won just three games all night. Two of those came at No. 2 doubles, where Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens fell 6-0, 6-2 to Brittney Key and Hannah Libler.
At No. 1 doubles, Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben lost 6-1, 6-0 to Ali Huston and Abbie Miller.
Alyssa Rigby, Jessica Ooten and Melinda Penrod all suffered shutout losses in singles action.
The Patriots dropped the junior varsity match 5-2 with the lone wins coming from the teams of Shawna Miller and Jill Dirksen, and Sydney Bost and Katy Smeltzer.

No. 3 Cowan edges SA
BERNE — The South Adams softball team pushed one of the best squads in the state Tuesday, falling 5-3 to the visiting Class 1A No. 3 Cowan Blackhawks.
The Starfires (10-15) trailed by just one run before Cowan (20-3) scored twice in the top of the seventh. SAHS scored once in the bottom of the frame, but could not pull off the comeback.
Alyssa Bluhm suffered the defeat, allowing five runs on 13 hits and two walks. She struck out four batters.
Lyndsey Chandler and Bluhm each went 3-for-4 with a run to lead the South Adams offense. Brianna Nevil added two hits and an RBI.

Jay JV baseball loses
Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team got on the board first Tuesday, but suffered a 5-2 loss to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and the game was tied at 2-2 after four. Bluffton scored three times in the sixth to take the win.
Taylor Fugiett suffered the defeat as he allowed five runs — two earned — on six hits in six innings. He struck out three batters.
Josh Lykins went 2-for-3 at the plate for JCHS with two runs. Ravel Patel also had a pair of hits.
