Jay Co. tankers clobber Blackford (03/14/06)

HARTFORD CITY — Jay County’s middle school swim team capped its season with a couple of victories Monday. The Jay County girls swept the top three in five events to roll over Blackford 128-56, and the boys team took first in five events and a pair of relays to earn a 107-59 victory.

Caitlyn Ruchgy won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle for the girls team, Lynne Inman was first in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle and Mikaila Segraves picked up victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Adding single wins were Megan Taylor in diving and Laura Bowen in the 100 breaststroke.

Finishing first for the boys team were Alex Sutton in the 200 freestyle, Wiley Young in the 500 freestyle, Neal Fennig in the 100 backstroke and Colton Smith in the 100 breaststroke. A.J. Pettyjohn finished first in diving.

Fort honors athletes

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery High School held its winter sports awards banquet Monday with nine athletes earning All-Midwest Athletic Conference academic honors.

Seven of the award winners — Sara Fortkamp, Shelly Gehret, Abby Niekamp, Ciera Rammel, Vicki Roessner, Holly Stein and Lauren Wenning — were members of the girls basketball team. Joining them from the boys team were Tony Diller and Curt Heitkamp.

Rammel, Roessner, Stein and Tiff Gaerke were each three-year letter winners. Stein was voted team MVP, and Rammel won the Indian Award.

Ryan Staugler and Travis VanSkyock picked up three-year letters for the boys team. VanSkyock was also the MVP, and Diller was the winner of the Indian Award.

Current scores top finish

ANDERSON — Lindsey Current scored the top finish as the Jay County track team hosted the inaugural Patriot Invitational at Anderson University Saturday.

Current finished tied for 11th in the girls high jump, clearing the bar at four feet, 10 inches.

Also finishing in the top 16 at the indoor event were Jess Mosier (13th) in the 1,600-meter run in 6-minutes, 22.90 seconds.

Brady Mills had the top effort for the boys team, placing 16th in the 1,600 run in 5:27.16.[[In-content Ad]]
