Jay Co. tankers set three records in season opener (02/05/05)

Local Roundup

MUNCIE — Jay County’s middle school swim team didn’t waste any time in bringing some records crashing down.

The tankers broke a pair of records Thursday in their first meet of the season in a couple of victories over the Delta Eagles. The Jay County girls won by a 107-75 final, and the boys team won 101-73.

Cori Vormohr was in on both records, and was also one of just two swimmers to win both of her individual events. She set a mark by herself, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in a school record time of 1-minute, 13.66 seconds. She also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.79.

Vormohr teamed with Michelle Landfair, Ivy Simons and Briann Saxman to take the 400-yard freestyle relay record in 4:31.11. The previous record, which was seven seconds slower, was set in 1996 by Taylor Fullenkamp, Lisa Weaver, Cassie Golden and Libby Weaver.

Neal Fennig was the other double winner for Jay County. He took the 200-yard individual medley in 3:26.18 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:37.20.

Landfair took the 50-yard freestyle for the girls team in 30.32, and Saxman added a win in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:33.73.

Following Fennig on the boys team were Chance Milligan, Colton Smith, Lance VanSkyock and Steve Kelly.

Milligan won the 50-yard freestyle in 28.33, Smith took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:35.95 and VanSkyock was first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:26.15. Kelly took the diving victory with 76.15 points.
