Jay Co. teams dominate early in victories (12/07/04)

Local Roundup

PORTLAND — The Patriots and Eagles were so much better in the first three quarters they didn’t even need to show up in the fourth.

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team went scoreless in the final period, but still clobbered the Bluffton Tigers Monday 35-10. It is now 3-1 on the season.

West Jay’s eighth grade girls basketball team also went without a point in the fourth quarter in a 23-17 victory over the Wes-Del Warriors. The West Jay seventh graders also topped Wes-Del, 31-16.

Brandon Buckland scored all of his game-high 15 points in the odd-numbered quarters for the freshman team. He scored four as the Patriots built an 8-2 lead in the first, and notched 11 of their 16 in the third.

Michael Jobe followed with six points, and Heath Rigby and Spencer Hummer each added five.

Trent Moore was the high scorer for Bluffton with six points.

The Eagle eighth graders (3-0) held the Warriors to one first-quarter point and were up 8-3 at halftime. They took advantage of a scoreless third quarter by Wes-Del to increase the lead to 16 points and won despite being outscored 10-0 in the fourth.

Baylea Holdcroft scored six points, and Kelci Reed followed with five. Dannie Grant and Chelsea Grady each had four.

West Jay’s seventh graders (3-0) pulled away by outscoring the Warriors 12-2 in the second quarter as they were led by Brittany Muhlenkamp’s 13 points. Jordyn Swearingen had six points, and Amber McCowan added four.

Cavs stop Fort

COLDWATER, Ohio — The Coldwater Cavaliers welcomed Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team for season-opening action and sent them home with a 55-42 loss.

The Indians fell behind 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and couldn’t recover. They were outscored in every quarter.

Kenton Sudhoff paced Fort Recovery with 13 points, and Bobby Rammel added seven.

Ben Tobe and Ross Overman had six points apiece, and Luke Bihn notched six rebounds.

Heritage tops SA

GENEVA — South Adams’ eighth grade boys basketball team was no match for the Heritage Patriots. And even with Nick Teeter’s 20 points the seventh grade team fell just short of a win.

The Starfire junior high squads dropped both games to Heritage Monday with the eighth graders going down by a 29-18 score and the seventh graders losing 33-32.

Teeter drilled a trio of 3-pointers for the Starfires, who led 28-23 with a period to play before the offense sputtered in the fourth quarter. Heath Moser added six points in the defeat, and Chase Ingle scored four.

The South Adams eighth graders managed just three points in each of the first three quarters. They matched that output with nine in the final period, but it was not nearly enough to overcome a 13-point deficit.

Cody Meshberger posted 10 points. Chris Stutzman finished with five.

Jay tankers blast Bellmont

PORTLAND — With wins in 12 of 14 relays and sweeps of six divisions the Jay County Winter Swim Team rolled to 2-0 with a 580-212 destruction of the Bellmont Swim Club Monday.
