Jay Co. trio leads Chargers (04/28/07)

Collegiate Check-up

When the Ancilla Chargers are winning, a Jay County graduate always seems to be in the mix.

Former Patriots Chad Keen, Cory Locke and Josh Shatto played major roles in the Ancilla College baseball team's victories during the past week.

Keen and Locke got the Jay County effort started in the first game of a double-header April 21 - a 13-3 victory over Jackson.

Locke, a 2006 JCHS graduate, went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Keen (2005) picked up the win, giving him back-to-back victories after losing his first three decisions.

In game two, Locke was one of four Chargers to hit a home run. He also had a double as he went 5-for-7 in the two-game set.

Shatto (2006) got into the act as Ancilla defeated Kalamazoo Valley Community College 4-2 in the second game of a double-header Tuesday. He entered in the eighth inning of a 2-2 tie, tossed two scoreless frames and picked up the victory when the Chargers scored twice in the top of the ninth.

Keen added a two-run single in the opening game against Kalamazoo.

Jill Roughia

Jay County - 2005

Spelled double trouble for the rest of the competition at the April 21 Wilmington Invitational, winning both of her individual events for the Huntington College women's track team.

Roughia was the only runner to finish the 1,500-meter run at the eight-team meet in less than five minutes, taking first place in 4-minutes, 59.4 seconds. She was also a solid winner in the 800 run with a time of 2:28.98 as she helped push the Foresters to a second-place finish.

Heath Williams

Jay County - 2004

Scored the game-tying run for the Manchester College baseball team in its 4-3 win Tuesday over Defiance.

Williams drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Matt Talarico. A Scott Tarnowski single loaded the bases, and the former Patriot tied the game at two on a sacrifice fly by Zac Bireley.

He also had a single, a run and an RBI in a 9-4 Spartan loss April 21 to Mount St. Joseph.

Nicole VanSkyock

Jay County - 2004

Contributed a pair of wins for the Anderson University women's track team April 21 as it hosted the AU Pre-Conference Invitational.

VanSkyock earned an easy individual victory in the 1,500-meter run, crushing the field by nearly 20 seconds in 5-minutes, 3.34 seconds. She also teamed with Molly Cummings, Kristen Reiff and Abigail Cochran for a winning time of 4:32.75 in the 4x400 relay.

Tyler Sprunger

South Adams - 2004

Did his part to give the Bluffton University baseball team a chance against Sunday only to have the Beavers fall to an 11-7 defeat.

Sprunger took over for Cody McPherson with Bluffton already trailing 11-2. He tossed 21/3 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball, but the Beavers were unable to climb all the way out of the hole.

He also pitched Tuesday in a 15-9 loss to St. Francis, giving up two runs on four hits in 12/3 innings.

Alyssa Johnson

Jay County - 2006

Helped the Taylor University women's track team to a fifth-place finish April 21 at the 13-team Olivet Nazarene Invitational.

Johnson placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13-minutes, 54.93 seconds. She also posted a time of 5:26.94 for 17th place in the 1,500 run.

Sarah Schmitz

Fort Recovery - 2003

Was one of four Cougars to score at least twice April 20 as the University of St. Francis softball team trounced Grace College 14-5.

Schmitz finished 1-for-4 with two runs in the victory.

Ian and Mitchell Thomas

Jay County - 2005

Were in competition as part of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track team at the Little State meet hosted April 14 by IUPUI.

Ian Thomas placed 33rd in the 10,000-meter run at 35-minutes 55.78 seconds, and his twin brother Mitchell was 36th in 36:37.62.[[In-content Ad]]
