Jay Co. up to 4th in state poll (05/13/03)

A couple more wins last week have the Jay County baseball team climbing in the state baseball poll again.

The Patriots (15-1) are ranked fourth in this week’s Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll with 44 points. Indianapolis Roncalli (15-1) is first, Pendleton Heights (17-1) is ranked second and Fort Wayne Concordia (15-1) is third.

Jay County was ranked seventh last week, but jumped three spots after wins over Muncie Central and Adams Central. The Patriots rallied for a 4-3, eight-inning win over the Bearcats Tuesday, and then stunned the Jets 11-1 Thursday.

The next game for Jay County is at Blackford Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Starfires stumble

The South Adams track teams each lost to Blackford Monday, with the boys team taking a 76-47 defeat while the girls team lost 83-40.

The boys team picked up three individual wins, one each by Josh Sprunger, Darius Martens and Kyle Litwiller.

Sprunger just nudged ahead at the finish line, winning by less than a second in the 3200-meter run. He finished with a time of 10:39.54. Litwiller was first in the long jump at 15 feet, nine inches, and Martens won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.14.

The Starfires also took first in the 3200-meter relay.

Jenny Lehman and Alyse Hoover teamed to dominate the 100-meter hurdles for the girls team, taking first and second place respectively. Lehman finished in 17.02, and Hoover crossed the line in 18 seconds.

Lauren Tooley was victorious in the 800-meter run in 2:37.93, and Laura Meshberger took the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, one-half inch.

South Adams will compete in the Allen County Athletic Conference meet Friday at 5 p.m.

Heritage tops SA

The South Adams softball team avoided a shutout with one run in the sixth inning, but couldn’t muster enough offense in a 3-1 loss to Heritage Monday.

The Starfires (3-10, 2-7 Allen County Athletic Conference) got a pair of hits, one run and one stolen base from leadoff hitter Jill Lehman. Carrie Nichols doubled, Jessica Smith had a single and Emily Thornton had the lone RBI.

Mickayla Smith took the loss, allowing three runs — two earned — on eight hits. She walked one and struck out one.

South Adams plays at Fort Wayne Wayne today at 4:30 p.m.

Stars no hit

South Adams’ baseball team was shut down Monday, losing a 10-0 decision to Heritage without garnering a single hit.

Tyler Sprunger took the loss for the Starfires. He allowed 10 runs — eight earned — in five innings.

He gave up eight hits while striking out one and walking two.

South Adams will host Norwell Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Cavs stomp FR

Coldwater’s bats just kept on slamming the ball Monday as the Cavaliers downed the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team 21-7.

The Indians (9-1) gave up six first-inning runs before managing to pull within two twice during the contest. However, Coldwater scored eight times in the sixth inning to put the game well out of reach.

Kelsie Will went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for the Indians. Megan Wenning added three hits, and Kristen Schwieterman, Brenda Rindler, Kim Link and Kelly Link each had two.

Ja-Mar wins

Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance defeated Inman U-Loc 14-9 Monday in their Portland Junior League Willie Mays League contest.

Ja-Mar got two hits apiece from Isaac Bruggeman and Brendan Reed. Reed was also the winning pitcher.

Carrolton Fischer and Matt Landfair each had a pair of hits for Inman.[[In-content Ad]]
