Jay Co. wins fourth straight

ANDERSON - The Jay County High School girls basketball team had just a slim lead at halftime, but pulled away in the second half Saturday for a 45-32 victory over the Anderson Highland Scots.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Patriots (8-2, 2-0 Olympic Athletic Conference), whose only losses this season are to Class 2A No. 4 Winchester and Class 3A No. 2 Norwell.

JCHS rolled to the win behind senior Pazia Speed, who led all scorers with 15 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Katie Butcher added nine points, and Danielle Link had eight points to go along with 10 rebounds. Mariah Hornaday scored seven points, and Erin Hunt dished out three assists.

Highland (3-4, 1-1 OAC) got nine points each from Jessika Lark and Kelsey Key, who also led the team with five rebounds.

In the junior varsity game Hannah Ainsworth scored seven points as the Patriots fell 34-31. Mollie May and Maria Murphy added six points apiece.

JC grapplers 3-2

MUNCIE - Jay County's wrestling team finished 3-2 Saturday at the Delta Duals.

The Patriots defeated Fort Wayne North Side 54-22, Greensburg 50-24 and the host Eagles 69-12. Their losses came against Adams Central, 51-27, and Greenwood, 49-21.

Drake Meska (130) ran his record to 18-1 on the season with a 5-0 day. Matt James (215) also went 5-0 and is now 17-2 this year.

Jake Boyer (HWT) was undefeated as well at 4-0, and Chase Louck went 3-0 wrestler matches at 119 and 125. Dyllan Derrickson (140), Eric Beougher (160), Daniel Ring (171) and Kyle Garringer (189) all went 3-2.

Ehr leads Starfires

NEW CASTLE - Josh Ehr turned in a perfect day Saturday in lead the South Adams wrestling team to a 3-2 record at the New Castle Super Duals.

The Starfires scored wins of 34-33 over Fishers, 52-19 over Southwestern and 63-12 over Anderson. They lost 40-33 to the 19th-ranked host Trojans and 37-30 to Alexandria.

Ehr (145) turned in a 5-0 record at the duals, winning four matches by pin and one with a major decision. Jim West (285) was also undefeated at 4-0.

T.J. Burnfield (140) went 4-1, and others who had winning days were John Striker (119) at 3-1, Todd Batt (125) at 2-1 and Nick Taylor (171) at 3-2.

Habegger, Fennig lead

OSSIAN - Alex Habegger and Neal Fennig led their respective teams Saturday at the Norwell Invitational.

Habegger had a runner-up finish as the South Adams boys swim team finished fifth at the 10-team meet with 95.5 points. Fennig turned in a third-place effort as Jay County took eighth with 63 while Carroll won easily at 361.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Habegger's time of 1:03.42 was good for second place behind Grant Music of Carroll. He also placed eighth in the 50 freestyle in 24.33.

Fennig was third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.95 behind Conner Snare of Carroll and Stephen Wucst of Bishop Dwenger. He added a fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.10.

Wiley Young was 10th in a pair of events for JCHS, and Jared Valentine also had a 10th-place finish.

For South Adams, Caleb Wurster was fourth in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle, Jacob Werst took sixth in the 100 butterfly and Cole Farlow finished ninth in the 100 freestyle.[[In-content Ad]]
