The Jay County Summer Swim team swept four divisions Saturday as it dominated the season-opening Wabash Valley Conference Relays at Jay County High School.
Jay County scored 2,164 points to take first place at the four-team event while Wells Community was second with 1,506.
Ashlyn Dow, Lilly Clemmons, Kearsten Myers and Eliza Bader took the top spot in every relay — medley, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle — in the 8-and-younger girls division. Sophie Bader, Katy Smeltzer, Ashley Mark and Anne Vormohr swept the 13-14-year-old girls division, and Katie Simmons, Eme Miller, Mary Hudson and Caitlin Mark won all five events in the 15-and-older girls division.
Adding a sweep for the Jay County boys were Quin Blakely, Alex LeMaster, Ian Reynolds and Robby Gardner in the 11-12-year-old events.
Julianna Blount, Sydney Mathias, Alex Bader and Audrey Shreve were first in the medley, butterfly and backstroke relays in the 11-12-year-old girls division.
Portland goes 3-1
The Portland Rockets swept the Michigan City Lakers 6-0 and 3-2 Saturday and then split with the Northwest Patriots, losing 5-4 and winning 10-1, on Sunday to push their record above .500.
Pitching was the story of the weekend for Portland (5-4, 4-1 Heartland League), which allowed just three runs in its three victories.
South Adams High School graduate Daniel Bollenbacher led the charge, shutting out Michigan City on just six hits in Saturday’s opener. Craig Martin scattered seven hits over six innings in picking up the game-two win over the Lakers, and Tyler Holloway tossed a four-hitter to earn the victory against the Patriots.
Dalton Tinsely, Geoff Bowers and Thomas McCowan (Jay County) each finished the weekend with five hits, and Heath Williams (Jay County) added four.
Ben Smith hit a home run in the game-one loss to Northwest.
Waters leads club
SALA BAGANZA, Italy — Mitch Waters had another big game for the Sala Baganza Baseball Club Saturday, leading the team to a 5-1 victory over Anzio.
The 2002 Jay County High School graduate went the distance on the mound to earn the win, striking out 12 batters. He gave up the one run on just four hits and two walks.
Waters also went 3-for-5 with a triple at the plate, improving his team-best batting average to .357. He leads Italy’s Serie 2A with six wins and a 0.66 ERA.
Wendel paces Sharks
DUNKIRK — Elizbeth Wendel was the scoring leader on the opening day of play Saturday in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
Wendel racked up four goals to lead the Sharks to a 10-1 win over the Sting Rays, and Carlos Lopez added three. Also scoring three goals on the day were Lilly Rogers, Gabriela Bilbrey, Daniel Fugiett, Zarron Lee and Chip Wendel.
Nichols takes first
MONTPELIER — A Portland driver took first place during competition Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Travis Nichols won the Thunder Cars race ahead of 18 other drivers to push himself to fifth place in the overall points for the season. Steve Mills, also of Portland, placed fifth and is now third in total points.
Also competing in the Thunder Cars race were Shawn Wible (ninth) of Bryant and Brian Baldauf (11th) of Portland.
In the Super Streets A Main race Jeff Baldauf and Richard Williams, both of Portland, were ninth and 12th respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
