Jay Co.'s Hess picks up first win (12/16/06)
Collegiate Check-up
A week after making his first appearance in the lineup, Kurt Hess won his first match.
Hess, a 2006 Jay County High School graduate, earned his first collegiate victory Dec. 9 as the Wabash College wrestling team competed at the Ohio Northern University Invitational.
The freshman competed in the 141-pound weight class, advancing through the opening round by way of a forfeit. He then picked up his first victory by a 15-8 score over fifth-seeded Ryan Lineberry of Findlay.
The win put Hess in the quarterfinals, where he fell 13-3 to Kyle Norred of Campbellsville. He dropped his first match in the consolation bracket 8-6 to Tri-State's Tom Pompei.
Hess had made one previous appearance in the Little Giants' lineup, winning by forfeit.

Scored five points as the Findlay University men's basketball team continued to climb the NCAA Division II rankings.
Niekamp hit his only 3-point attempt and made both of his free throws for five points Dec. 9 as the Oilers defeated Ashland 92-67. He also had two steals and two rebounds in 14 minutes of play.
Findlay is now ranked ninth in the country and is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
