WINCHESTER — You could see them growing up before your eyes.

After each of the first three games Jay County coach Kirk Comer had talked at length about his team’s youth. After the fourth, he didn’t have to.

His Patriots showed poise in a close game, coming up big in the fourth quarter. They outscored the host Winchester Golden Falcons 18-4 during a six-minute stretch of the final period for a 65-58 victory.

“I think we matured tonight ...” said Comer. “In the locker room after the game Markie Runyon said, ‘It was a great team effort girls.’ She hit the nail right on the head.

“Hopefully that’s going to be the way we play from here on out. It’s a big win for us.”

The great team effort came as six different players scored seven points or more with sophomore Cassandra Huelskamp leading the charge with a career-high 13.

Jay County (2-2) trailed 52-47 after Winchester scored the first hoop of the fourth quarter, but the Patriots went to work after that.

They pulled within three on a put-back basket by Nicole Pfeifer, then tied the score when Theresa Reinhart buried a 3-pointer from the right corner on an assist from Huelskamp with 5:46 to go. They grabbed the lead on a Runyon basket, then saw Winchester pull back ahead 56-54.

But after Runyon tied the game again with 2:43 to play, Jay County went wild from the foul line. The Patriots hit nine of their final 11 free throw attempts — four by Huelskamp — while holding the home team scoreless. It added up to an 11-0 run before the Golden Falcons scored with four seconds left for the final margin.

“We had some shots that we just couldn’t get to drop,” said Winchester coach Gary Horner. “We had to start hurrying a little bit towards the end. We had to put them at the free throw line. They stepped up and hit their free throws. That’s what basically capped the game.”

Comer credited the outstanding fourth quarter first to switching defenders against Winchester leading scorer Morgan Peacock (22 points), then to shifting to a triangle-and-two defense once his team pulled ahead.

“It was a different look,” said Comer. “Once we got the lead we were trying to prevent them from hitting a three. I thought our girls showed great composure when we spread the floor. We had two sophomores out there at the time ... They came through tonight.”

Huelskamp led the Patriots, who trailed by just two at the half but gave up the first eight points of the third quarter for a 40-30 deficit, thanks in part to a great foul-shooting effort. She finished 6-of-6 from the stripe — Jay County outscored the Golden Falcons 16-6 there overall — en route to her career-high total. She also shared the team-high of eight rebounds with Chelsea DeBoy, and dished out three assists.

Runyon, following her 21-point, 10-rebound effort against Bellmont, was the only other Patriot in double figures as she went 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for 10 points.

Sara Garringer had nine points, and DeBoy finished with eight. Reinhart and Pfeifer each scored seven, and Dana Horn had a team-best four assists.

Instead of Comer, Horner was the coach talking about his youthful squad.

“It’s a very young team,” said the Winchester coach, who has a senior-less roster. “They’re going to learn each game. We’ve had three close ones and we’ve won by one, lost by two and now tonight. We’ve been in some close contests and in the long run that will help us out.”

Peacock tortured the Patriots with 20 points in the first three quarters, but managed just two in the final period. She also had a team-best six rebounds.

Lyndsey Goodhew added 10 points, Chelsea Hawley had eight and Mallory McCormick and Alli Woodbury each notched seven. Woodbury had four assists.

Jay County rolled to 4-0, doubling up the host Golden Falcons 42-21.

The teams traded free throws in the first 18 seconds, but the Patriots followed with an 8-0 run and were never challenged. They led by nine points at the half, then outscored Winchester 10-2 in the third period en route to the win.

Brittany O’Dell set the pace for Jay County as she scored 13 points.

Amber Edmundson also reached double figures with 10 points as the Patriots dominated the paint.

Brittany Mann scored seven points, and Kaelee Keller had six.

Winchester was led by Erin Friend with five points and Xia Xianna Baker with four.[[In-content Ad]]
