Jay County clobbers the Indians (09/08/03)

Ten different players scored for the Jay County boys soccer team Saturday as it walloped the Union City Indians 11-1.

The Patriots (5-1) scored six times in the first half and five in the second half, led by a pair of goals from freshman Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman. He scored 12 minutes into the game to give Jay County a 2-0 lead, and added a goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Kyle Carpenter scored once, his eighth goal of the year, and added an assist. Also scoring for the Patriots were Chad Keen, Dave Johnston, Mason Shreve, Jonas Schoenherr, Trent Bailey, Sergio Woo, Drew Lloyd and Nick May.

Shreve, Adam Brandt, Josh Thornburg and Eduardo Nieto each had assists.

Union City did not score its first goal until it trailed 7-0.

Jay County returns home when it hosts Muncie Burris Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

Fort CC boys 4th

Paced by Jason Groff’s 10th-place finish, the Fort Recovery boys cross country team placed fourth at the Spencerville Invitational Saturday.

Groff led the way with a time of 17:43. He was 50 seconds faster than his next closest teammate.

He was followed by Derrick Huelskamp (22nd) in 18:33 and Mitch Fullenkamp (23rd) with a time of 18:34. Derick Faller (33rd) had a time of 19:17, and Tom Roessner (36) and Dan Roessner (37) finished with identical times of 19:25.

Leading the way for the girls team was Lindsay Sudhoff in 23:27. Leanne Pottkotter had a time of 24:58, and Marisa Minor came in with a time of 26:14.

Emily Wendel crossed the line in 26:42, and Kimbra Hein rounded out the varsity scoring in 29:27.

Jim Roessner had the top junior varsity boys time of 20:00.

At the junior high level Tina Roessner placed 11th on the girls team in 14:01. Andrea Faller finished with a time of 18:07.

Adam Steinbrunner led the boys team in 17th place with a time of 13:04. Tyler Huelskamp finished in 19:00.

FR freshmen win

It took them three games, but the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team remained unbeaten with a 15-5, 5-15, 15-8 victory over Wapakoneta Saturday.

Holly Stein paced the team, leading the Tribe (5-0) with five kills and 32 sets. She also had seven points.

Jodi Tobe notched a team-best 13 points, and Lauren Wenning added a couple of blocks. Abby Niekamp put up 18 sets and had two digs, and Brittany Brackman also had a pair of digs.

Jags lose opener

The Jay County Jaguars under-12 girls soccer team lost its first game of the season Sunday 3-2 to Centerville.

Pazia Speed gave Jay County a 1-0 lead with a first-half goal, but Centerville knotted the score at halftime and jumped ahead 2-1 in the second. Speed tied the game on an assist by Leah Wellman, but Centerville nailed a penalty kick for the game winning score.

Speed led the Jaguars with six shots on goal, and Wellman took four shots.

Loryn Horn made six first-half saves, and Kayla Phillips had three saves in the second half.[[In-content Ad]]
