Jay County falls at Richmond (04/16/03)

Local Roundup

Jay County just couldn’t quite keep up with Richmond Tuesday.

The Patriots led 14-0 early and were still up after four events, but lead slowly slipped away and into the Red Devils’ favor as Jay County lost a 72-51 decision.

Results for the girls team were not available at press time.

The lead was built on an opening win by Adam May, Kurtis Hess, Ryan Younts and Daniel Scott in the 3200-meter relay. Hess also joined in a sweep of the 110-meter hurdles in the second race.

Adam Grile was first in 16.59, Hess placed second (18.42) and Trent Bash placed third (25.71).

However, the Patriots earned just three more victories through the rest of the meet.

One of them came from Hess, who easily took the 300-meter hurdles in 51.09. Paul Imel added a victory in the 200-meter dash in 23.28.

Jay County also won the 1600-meter relay as the team of Younts, Imel, Doug Murray and Kyle Carpenter finished in 4:31.81.

The Patriots (0-2) run again Thursday at Delta at 4:30 p.m.

Big weekend for Jay

The opening weekend of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing at Indiana’s newest pari-mutuel track was a big one for several current and former area residents.

Jockey Rodney Prescott, a former Jay County resident who now lives in southeast Indiana, won three races during Saturday’s grand opening at Indiana Downs near Shelbyville, while a horse owned and trained by rural Portland resident Sheri Loy also won a quarter horse feature on Saturday.

The first races at Indiana Downs, located just off Interstate 74 northwest of Shelbyville, were actually held on Friday night.

But during Saturday’s special afternoon grand opening, Prescott got off to a very fast start, riding winners in the second, third and fourth races. Prescott, who has ridden at Hoosier Park in Anderson as well as tracks in Cincinnati and Florence and Henderson, Ky., also rode second place finishers in the eighth and ninth races on Saturday.

The winning effort for Loy came in the 12th race, the Blue River Derby, as A Down Right Runaway, ridden by Lee Gates, won the 330-yard race in a time of :17.001.

The total purse for the race, divided among the competitors, was $17,700.

A Down Right Runaway paid $11.40 for a $2 win bet, $7.40 to place, and $4.20 to show.
