Jay County falls to the Bearcats (01/19/05)

Jay County Roundup

MUNCIE — The Bearcats wouldn’t allow the Patriots to get a winning streak going against them.

Coming off victories over Hagerstown last week, both Jay County swim teams fell at Muncie Central Tuesday. The boys team took a 115-65 defeated, while the girls lost 122-63.

The Patriot boys (1-6) managed three wins, two of which involved senior Derick Lee.

Lee took the only individual swimming win for the team, finishing first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2-minutes, 4.77 seconds. He also joined Matt Peterson, Joseph Vormohr and Josh Hawn in taking first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.03.

The only other Jay County win came from Ryan Sutton in diving with a score of 79.90.

Diving provided the only win for the girls team (3-7) as Brittany Lewis highlighted the night. She scored a career best 130.90 to finish first, with teammate Lacey VanSkyock just behind with a personal-best 125.15.

JC freshmen win

SELMA — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team improved to 8-4 Tuesday with a 30-25 victory over the Wapahani Raiders.

The Patriots took an 8-4 lead in the first quarter and pushed the advantage to seven points at halftime. Wapahani fought back in the second half, but Jay County got enough production in the second half to survive.

Michael Jobe led that effort, scoring eight of his game-high 12 points after the break. Brandon Buckland added seven points, all in the first half, and Aaron Daniels scored six points.

EJ loses heartbreaker

PORTLAND — East Jay’s wrestling team opened its season Tuesday, losing a tight 48-47 battle with the Delta Eagles.

In the defeat, the Chiefs got two pins in less than 20 seconds, with Casey Kenney (95) winning in nine seconds and David Jones (135) finishing off his opponent in 18 seconds.

Also winning on pins were Cameron Pfeifer (90), Mason Murphy (100), Caleb Culy (110), Ben Theurer (115) and Nate Wood (152).

Dyllan Derrickson and Scott Houston each won in junior varsity matches.

Delta tops Chiefs

MUNCIE — The Delta Eagles junior high boys basketball teams handed East Jay a pair of losses Tuesday, including the first for the Chief eighth graders. Delta took the eighth grade game 47-29, and topped East Jay in the seventh grade contest 36-25.

The Chief eighth graders slipped to 7-1 on the year, with Cole Ingram scoring a team-high nine points. Adam Garringer, Billy Wellman and Lance Franklin each scored four points.

Eric Homan had nine points for the seventh grade team (4-4). Tyler Freyburger followed with six points, and Brad Horn added four.

Community Center

The Jay Community Center has made several adjustments to its schedule because of missed days from the power outage.

The registration deadline for the Boomer Basketball Academy has been moved to Thursday. The deadline to register for adult programs, including indoor soccer, indoor co-ed wiffle ball, co-ed volleyball and men’s 5-on-5 basketball is also Thursday.[[In-content Ad]]
