Jay County girls repeat as conference champions (10/08/04)

ANDERSON — Consider the first step in what the Jay County girls cross country team hopes to be a long postseason a success.

The Patriots took three of the top five spots in the Olympic Athletic Conference meet for the second straight year, winning a second consecutive title with 30 points. Anderson Highland was second with 41 points, followed by Connersville (72) and Muncie Southside (94).

Jay County’s boys team was last in the four-team event at Mounds State Park in Anderson with a score of 101. Muncie Southside took the title with 22 points, Connersville was second with 49 and Anderson Highland was third at 63.

Junior Alyssa Johnson, who won the OAC title last year, finished second behind Connersville’s Samantha Herdrich in 17:13. Herdrich, who finished second last season, was nearly 10 seconds ahead.

Freshman Amanda Johnson grabbed fourth place for Jay County in 17:35, and fellow freshman Amber Detro was fifth in 18:06.

Senior Jill Roughia took seventh in 18:21, and sophomore Jessica Mosier was 12th in 19:33 to complete the team score.

Zoe Gonzalez finished 13th in 19:50, and Lindsey Vesperry was 14th in 19:54.

Doug Murray was the top runner for the boys team for the first time all season, finishing 18th in 19:22 to lead a string of Patriots. Ian Thomas was 19th in 19:25, Corey Mock finished 20th in 19:29 and Josh Atkinson was 21st in 19:33.

Travis Towell rounded out the score in 23rd with a time of 20:02. Also, Mitchel Thomas was 25th in 20:19, and Josh Selvey took 27th in 21:00.

Andrea Collins was the top junior varsity finisher for the girls, and Edwin Clott led the way for the JV boys.

Jay County will compete at the Bellmont sectional Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Boys soccer ties MC

MUNCIE — The final game of the year was set to decide whether 2004 would be a winning or losing regular season for the Patriots. Instead, it finished dead even.

The Jay County boys soccer team finished 7-7-1 thanks to a 1-1 tie against the Muncie Central Bearcats Thursday.

Muncie Central got on the board first, scoring on a header after a throw-in 11 minutes into the second half. But, Trent Bailey evened the score off a corner kick from Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman as he booted his 22nd goal of the season.

Derek Mills made seven saves.

Jay County will open tournament play Tuesday at the Blackford sectional, taking on Huntington North at 5:30 p.m.

Tigers blank JC girls

YORKTOWN — The Jay County girls soccer team dropped the final game of its regular season Thursday, falling by a 3-0 score to the Yorktown Tigers.

The game was scoreless for the first 35 minutes, but Yorktown scored in the final five minutes for the first half for a 1-0 lead. The Tigers put the ball in the net again less than five minutes into the second half, and added a third goal with 13:21 remaining for the final margin.

Yorktown took 16 shots on goal, compared to none for the Patriots. Abby Loy finished with 13 saves.

Jay County will play its sectional opener against the host Marion Giants Monday at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
